Disassembling a Ford 711/722 loader life cylinder. I know Soundguy and maybe a few other that visit this forum have these Ford One Arm Loaders. I need to disassemble, clean and repack/reseal the lift cylinder.

My question is - - can anyone give me advice on how to unscrew the large collar (in the parts book they call it a Box Stuffing).

And of course I will take any advise on the packing and seals that anyone wants to pass along.

I can't tell you how to undo it. You might want to have a good clean surface to land all of the pieces when you do take it apart. And some good clean towels or rags. Another thing that saves me some time is wearing the nitrile gloves to keep my hands cleaner..

imho.. unless you are setup for it it is going to be a MONUMENTAL task. Unless it leaked I would not even attempt it.

you will need a sturdy immoveable non warping metal table with preferably a fixture to hold a cyl down.. like a double vice setup made for holding pipe. plus a large spanner similar to a pipe wrench for that head piece.

no way I'd ever touch one. last one I had rebuilt at the hyds shop used off the shelf chevron packing, was done while i waited ( 20 minutes ), and cost 80 $

for that price i'll never touch one.. surely not to 'clean it' if it's dirty.. just flush it...

As Soundguy said, you'll need a good vise, pretty basic "V packing" (aka chevron packing)......

Make sure the chrome rod is clean, not damaged.......

super polish and clean and reassemble...... IMO doesn't get much easier than that....

Thanks Soundguy - and others - - thanks for the reply

I have cycled it several time by-hand and still getting a few of those grease balls. It is like the unit set for months and the oil in the cylinder dryed and form grease. Should not have done that unless seal or breathing plug is lose and allowed air. But as I cycle it, it is like this grease is breaking lose and forming these balls floating in the hydraulic oil.

I do not have that much experance with hydraulic cylinders but that does not appear normal to me.

Just do not want to screw up tractor's pump / valve.

When you suggest flash it - - are you suggesting kerosene or some other fluid cleaner?

Think I will also check and see if I can find a reasible Hydraulic Shop if I do not get those grease balls cleaned up here soon.

Anyway you look at it, you need to get the grease balls out of the system. They will clog up and slow down operation. New hydraulic fluid with detergents might break down some of the stuff, but I would flush and clean the reservoir, cyl, etc as much as possible.

I had some new cans of Quaker state oil that had congealed. It was probably 30+ years old, as the cans were not made of metal, but cardboard looking stuff.

sure.. I use atf, alcohol and kerosene as a flushing agent.. add it to the cyl, agitate and then dump thru a paint filter or tshirt then recycle the fluid and keep doing it..
