Directional Control Valve

I am working my way through the manual trying to get my 455 hydrostatic transmission working. One of the items the manual tells you to check is the direction control valves.

My issue is with item 4 - Internal valve must move freely when valve is shaken.

Neither of the valves do this and they appear to be spring loaded so I dont think they are meant to. Can anyone shed light on this?

Also, I believe these items are a single peice and cant be dismantled, is this correct?

The button / plunger on top should move up and down freely. These can get corroded and stick when pressed in and that will allow the HST to "free wheel".

You are correct, I do not believe they can be dismantled.

I have taken a small screw driver and very carefully pried the plunger back out. I am sure this is not a recommended procedure but it worked for me once.

I don't remember if they will rattle when shook.
