Direct Vent Heater

I am installing a temporary direct vent lp heater.

The vent is a 2 piece pipe - the inside pipe discharges the fumes while the outside pipe draws in the combustion air.

QUESTION:

To make the hole to the outside, I cut thru my 1.5" pink rigid foam insulation, and made the hole tight to the pipe. The outside pipe seems to get pretty warm. Is there a concern that the heat from the outside pipe will set the rigid foam insulation on fire? There should be no sparks or direct flame, but the heat concerns me a bit.

Our 1st fishhouse had the same set-up. We also were concerned about the heat so we made the hole a little bigger and wrapped heat reflecting insulation around the pipe. To protect the insulation from the elements, we put a protective cone around the pipe and applied caulking.

I know the stuff works, because we use the same insulation to line the space where our 20,000 BTU furnace sits in our new fish house. On the heat side of the insulation, it's very very hot, but the back side does not even get warm.

Our new house is not direct vent, but the pipe that runs through the wall is double walled with 3/4 inch of insulation between. I'm surprised they don't make the direct vent pipes the same way.

If you didn't get any installation instructions with the vent pipe, here's a link to a page which has instructions for several different brands of flue vents. You may find something there that is close to what you have.
