Looking for a new 3 row head for our silage chopper an dealer suggested a dion rotary head. I've seen them on the big self propelled units. He said its very few moving parts an a lot more efficiend an less strain on tractor. Does anyome have any experience with the rotary heads? How's the maintence? Do they really increase cutting speed? An is the extra cost worth it. Right now we cut 40 acres. Probably gonna go to about 55 next year.

We used to use KEMPER headers custom cutting and Cant see why it would be an advantage on a pull type But the main advantage with a self propelled is row widths dont matter , you can even cut accross rows and they will cut oats or wheat for grain silage and they get very expensive if you have rocks . Never found power or speed to be any different with them...I would'nt see much sense in one for those few acres .

Its a rotary head for our pull type. I couldn't come close to affording a big self propelled unit

Also u are right we are considering itg also for row width. We plant in 36 inch rows an its been hard finding a descent head for our chopped set on 36 inch rows

Unless you've got money to burn, you'd be out of your mind to blow $25,000 on a rotary head for 50 acres. They're meant for high production.

They also require more hp than a conventional head.

You can buy a NH head for less than half the cost of a rotary head.
