Got a chance to work Lowell today. The local Ford/New Holland dealer had a "used" Speeco post hole digger. It's the largest, HD version (PD240460000). Other than a small bit or paint rubbed off on the edge of the cutters and tip looked brand new, and I got it for $400 less than the new ones go for. Anyway, I only had time to dig four holes, but at just above an idle Lowell was barely working.
Mind you, this is the same place that I tried for 1/2 an hour to dig using a little hand held gas powered auger and only got 4 inches down. Now that I see how much wear the paint got only doing that little amount of digging I'm convinced this might have dug one hole for the previous owner and not more than 1' down. It chewed through some roots and rocks like they were hardly there. The clay was the hardest thing to deal with but the screw point had no trouble getting in there.
The gas that's in Lowell smelled pretty old, so after working a bit I just drove him to town to get fuel. Ended up putting 12 gallons in, so there's still 5 gallons of old fuel to deal with. Hope to burn it out soon, that ethanol is nasty stuff.
Anyway, pics:
