what are the merits and weaknesses between the different hydraulic pumps?
please inform me if I am missing a option.
belt drive, pto driven, mechanical, and I would assume there's most likely a ellectric pump of some sort.

A pump needs a certain amount of HP to run it, so the application will determine the driving source. The electric motor can be smaller in HP to get the same job done. Rpm has to be considered.

Did you mean the differences between the gear, vane, screw type, piston, hand pumps, etc?

Belt drive takes a lot of side force on the pump shaft, so a pump for belt drive have to be designed (shaft seal and bearing) for belt drive.

There are fixed displacement pumps and variable displacement pumps....how they are used depends on application or system type...

Piston pumps are the most efficient, followed by vane pumps and gear pumps..

Thanks for the replies guys. I guess the question wasn't as easy and clear as I thought. what i am wondering is what pump options would be best for me.

I have a case 831 diesel I plan on running a backhoe attachment and some other attachments requiring high flow for smooth operation. the current pump doesn't appear to meet those needs so I have to select a auxillary pump.
I have a slew of pto driven attachments so don't want to tie it up.

what would be the best routes to explore and why? the belt drive seems simple enough but the feedback hasn't been real positive. what else is there?

Rebuild your pump if it is bad. Most belt pumps will not compare with flow of what yours should already have. That leaves you with finding a way to run a pump off of crank shaft.

You need to define "high flow", that takes a lot of HP, a big reservoir, and large hoses. What are you trying to run, and what is your budget?
