I want a diesel tractor. I love the smell of diesel after it comes out the exaust. I know im going to have to save my pennies for a loooooooooooooooooooong time. Im just looking for a used 16hp or so diesel garden tractor that has a pto and 3 pt hitch. Roughly how much do I have to save? Whats the best tractor for the money?

Now meaning to answer you with a question but.... it depends on so many things..... brand name or gray market, loader/no loader, what do you want to do with the tractor, about how old do you want - newer or real old. some of these questions will really help people give you an answer.

Don't be huffin those fumes. They can be harmful. :)

I think if you want a good used model, between 5k and 10k will get you a really nice low hour used model. Problem with a used model is that you have to take their word on a lot of stuff. If you want an older compact gas tractor, you can get many for under 5k and as low as 2k in good working condition. Around my area, the stuff sells for too much. People try to sell it like it was new. Those prices are what i saw when i was looking online. Nothing was local for me, but the national listings were in these ranges. Save up about 6k, and I am sure you will find what you want with out a bunch of fixing to keep it running.

5-6K is a good estimate of a pretty nice used later model machine. If you don't mind the Grey market machines or older tractors (1980's) you can get away with less. Just seen a Kubota for $3200 here in WV (think it was 19hp maybe) - older model but looked like it was VERY well taken care of!

Do a nationwide search of Craigslist using a search engine like searchtempest.com for Deere 455 to get a range of prices.

I wish I was seeing that in my area. I think it's easy to find an F8 in the 1k to 3k price range, but thats gas. There's the old AC's and some farmalls and 60's JD's. Those are all gas. My neighbor has a really cool diesel allis. Looks to be a 70's or 80's. That's kind of a rare beast. I think around here, it would be easier to find a cheap 60hp tractor than a 20hp diesel CUT. Not sure if they leave the area, or they are just all painted green. I swear that John Deere paint must be made from ground up hundred dollar bills the way the repainted equipment costs. The farmers all had small tractors in the fifties and sixties, then went big in the seventies. An example of this was when I was looking around for my b2620. One dealer said he wouldn't mess with any thing smaller than the b2920. I guess the smaller tractors just don't have much of a market around here, so they sell for a lot, or get sold to a different market.

Go to eBay and search for Yanmar tractors. You'll find 16 hp diesels and get an idea of the auction prices being paid.

My local grey market tractor guy generally has some small Yanmars in stock

You probably can find similar stuff in your neck of the woods.

Good Luck.
