I just purchased a 33 gallon tank that was used for juice storage. It is the typical blue drum that you see everywhere. It has the number 2 on the bottom in the center of a recycle symbol. I plan on using it for my off road diesel instead of the 5 gallon jugs. I plan to use my FEL to off load it once full.

Does anyone know if that type of container would cause any problems. I assume that the plastic will hold up to the diesel, but I thought I would check with those wiser than me...

But how do you plan on getting the fuel out of the drum into the tractor?

hand pump - do you know anything about the reaction with that type of plastic?

There are plastic drums and then there are plastic drums. I bought a couple dozen a while back. I have seen them used for shipping oil based products. A 55 gal drum will weigh about 385 lbs full of diesel (or thereabouts.) Since you will be handling the full drum with your FEL, why not construct a simple raised platform with a bottom as high as the fuel cap on your tractor? You can place the drum there and gravity (siphon) fuel to your tractor with no pumping.Priming the hose when the drum is full is trivial. Once primed (assuming a cut off valve near the tractor end of the hose) the hose will stay primed until the drum is empty. You need never suck on a hose.

If you are concerned with the long term effects of diesel on the plastic drum, get a 55 gal metal drum. These come in different weights. Get a heavier one as it will last longer. I pay $5 for used but like new 55 gal metal drums with bung plugs and $6 for plastic ones that come out of the cosmetics industry (Cherry and Rain Forest are two of my favorite scent concentrates and the stock don't mind eating out of them.)

Check with any local trucking company. They will usually get their anti-gel in 55 gal lined metal drums. Usually drums are returned from other stuff, but the anti gel drums are a non return most of the time.

I got 6 of these off of the company I work for. They are really great for diesel storage and since they had anti gel in them, there is no real need to clean them out or worry about foreign junk in the fuel.

As for a good pump for these, I got one off of Northern Tool that has a adaptor that fits the 55 gal drum. It is electric. I got some threaded pipe from my local farm supply and installed a filter/water separator on it with about 15 ft of hose and nozzle. works like a charm.

I was given two 100 gallon aluminum fuel tanks that are used on semi trucks. Both tanks were dented and missing there fuel caps. Oddly enough, it's almost impossible to find a fuel cap for certain tanks.

I had a welding shop weld a female threaded coupleing to the tank and the I put on a electric fuel pump from tractor supply. A discount and it being on sale made it pretty cheap.

I connected both tanks and fill one tank, then pump from the other tank.

I can get ecaxtly two hundred gallons in it if I fill it slowly. If I pay cash when I buy it, I get 3 cents off per gallon.
