Diesel Motor Oil Spec\'s

Attached is an Excel Spreadsheet I compiled with a number of relevant diesel oil performance measurements. This is as many as I could find at various producer websites.. Not all producers provide consistent performance characteristics or some not at all such as Texaco, Sunoco, Amalie. etc. No one measurement is "Best" you need to put several together based on your individual needs, equipment, climate which might include Viscosity, pour point and TBN. You can order or sort the catagories as you wish... You might be surprised at some of the numbers. Again, these were provided by the Mfg.s and many stated these were average test results. A couple of pointers.

Higher Viscosity is Good.
Higher TBN is Good (to a point dependent on ash content)
Lower Ash Content Good
Lower Pour Point Temperature Good (stated in Farenheit)
Higher Flash Point Temperature Good (stated in Farenheit)

NOTE: Spreadsheet did not come across... will retry when reconfigured....

Re: Diesel Motor Oil Spec\'s

Yea !!!!!!! An Excel Spreadsheet changed to a TXT format... not very sortable but readable... Well, we are still in the test mode...after review, the column headings shifted out of the cell's and a couple of the Pour Point and Flash Point number reversed in the columns... also a couple of Flash Points ended up in TBN column... Will try and tweek... but all in all not too bad.....

Relooked at my spreadsheet, it is correct with columns and data.. the TXT format must not read all the data correctly... I will need to try a couple of different formats... any suggestions?

The only thing I can think of, if you want people to be able to use it as a spreadsheet, is to do the following. It's not as nice as being able to click on the Attachment link and see a spreadsheet, but it's the next best thing.

1. Save a copy of the spreadsheet, dieseloil2.xls
2. Rename it as dieseloil2.jpg
3. Attach it to a post.
4. People can then right click on the attachment indicator and select 'Save Target As...'
5. When the Save As box comes up, they change the suffix back to .xls.

I used this procedure with your text file. I downloaded it, changed it back into a spreadsheet and attached it to this post with a .jpg suffix.

Re: Diesel Motor Oil Spec\'s

Thanks for the guidance Mike on the excel attachment. I hope it was of some interest or use to you as there has been lot's of discussion in the past about diesel engine oils.

I thought a comparison of the oil specifications might help shed a bit of light on the subject. Maybe not...........

Surge, your file works fine. All you have to do is download it as is and then open Excel. In Excel click Open and then choose Text Files and then choose your file. Excel will then give you a choice to open this file either as a Delimited or Fixed Width file. Choose Delimited, the file looks fine. Then you can save it as a xls file for use in the future.

Re: Diesel Motor Oil Spec\'s

Great chart.

On another forum www.bobistheoilguy.com some real experienced oil-heads hang out. One of them suggested that the best way to pick an oil is by the manufactures tests an oil can pass. Some agreement was come to suggesting that any oil that passed the Cummins CES 20078 was great diesel oil.

I'm partial to Schaeffer's products myself. Running 7000 series 15w-40 in everything from my JD 790 to my wifes Saturn.
