yanmar 1300d
So I just bought a Yanmar 1300D. It start pretty easy, doesn't smoke much once its been running for a few minutes. I'm going over everything to figure out what need attention.

I went to open the air filter housing and diesel came out. I don't know what to think it wasn't a whole lot but an ounce or so and the air filter was saturated. Can someone tell me what could cause this?

Thank in Advance! I've order some filter and manuals from Hoye, but I really curious what's going on here. I also know the fuel filter housing is missing an o-ring and drips if you don't turn it off.

Welcome.

My first check would be to determine if the filter was saturated as a means to improve filtration similar to a K&N type filter.
If not the next thought would be an intake valve not closing completely allowing fuel to be pushed back to the filter.
Next, a leaking injector.

Others on this site may have more experience with this problem.

A compression test will tell you if a valve is not sealing properly. You will have very low compression in that cylinder. Worn valves will read in the 100-200 psi range and bad rings will usually be in the 150 to 300 psi range.

You can also pull the valve cover and see if the area around the valve stem shows fuel or if any of the valve stems are loose in the guides indicating excess wear.

THANKS FOR THE pic.. Since it does have the Air Filter on the Side. I bet it's Blow BY. Oil Getting past the Rings and blowing by a valve into the Air filter. If it was mine I would Change all Filters,New Oil and Set the Valves and Run it. Keep the AF clean, Oil in it May last for Yrs. and even get better. Typical Problem for a old motor. Plus Fairly easy if you do have to go in it.

If it has Thermostart,it is probably leaking.

Sorry for the ignorance...can you tell me what "set the valves" means? I've got all the manuals coming from Hoye as well as filters.

Along with Barry, my bet would be on the Thermostart module leaking. It's simple to replace.
