so i have a s10 blazer that is primarily farm vehicle. it was getting near E, and didn't feel like going to town and filling it up, so i grabbed a couple 5 gallon cans and filled it up.

needless to say, i wasn't paying attention, and i have 1 can cleary marked "diesel" on it. and ended up dumping that into the gas tank along with a regular 5 gallon can of gas into the tank.

oh she started up like normal, but within a minute, that turned out to a "Clug clug clug" puttering along engine.

once i realized what i did, only took a couple minutes, i shut vehicle down. more like i was stuck on a hill, and couldn't get enough rpms / power to get up the hill.

==============
trying to shove a hose down into the tank to siphon diesel out was a no go.
i figure i would have to drop the tank.

my cousein aka family gear head. showed up, and i ask him if it was possible to unhook fuel line some were near the engine, it was possible but would take dismantling a good amount of stuff to get a hose on....

he then jacked up the blazer on one side, and removed the "fuel filter" just below the driver side door.

i had a old fuel pump that i used to put fluid in rear tires of tractors, so grabbed hose and pipe clamps and connected it to the line coming from the tank, and it would not suck the fuel out. (fuel pump inside the tank was causing issues and more likely some sort of check valve or like)

so he said, lets pull the pump off that i had, and simply turn the key, so starter on vehicle just started to turn and then back the key off quickly, so the fuel pump in the tank would kick on for a couple seconds, this seemed to work. but was slow and running battery dead.

somewere along the lines he noted, hooking pump i had, and run a hose into a 5 gallon gas can, and run to the line that ran up to the fuel injectors. the pump i had simply didn't provide enough "pressure" and engine would only turn over if some starter fluid was sprayed into the carb area. but engine would not stay running.

by this time, i had the battery charger hooked up the s10 blazer battery, set to 55 amp fast charge / starting mode. (120, 55,20,2 amp) choices. the project already was dragging out to be a couple hours long. he had to go some place. so after he left, i just kept turning the key on/off for fuel pump in tank to turn on for a couple seconds at a time. after some time finally got it all the way down to point i was pumping air bubbles and bad fuel in the tank. i dumped about 1 to 2 more gallons of gas into the tank, and pumped that out. with turning key on/off to get fuel pump to turn on for a couple seconds. hooked up old fuel filter, and engine cranked right on over and developed RPMs like it should, though i could tell it had the diesel glug glug glug coming from tail pipe, and it didn't have the fuel power it should just yet (to be expected).

with approx 3 to 5 gallons of gas in it after i reinstalled old fuel filter, i ran till she was almost on fumes, then put a full tank of good gas in it. and after about 30 minutes sounds like she is suppose to. with full power back in her.

i have a new fuel filter, that will be putting on, here shortly. when i got some cash saved up, will let someone else install new plugs in it. i am not afraid to work on tractor, but will pay someone else to deal with vehicles. to much bending upside down and crawling for this old body to take.

===================
i guess moral of the story.... instead of dropping the gas tank, i just used the fuel pump that was in the tank to pump the tank down from were the fuel filter was at, i just wish there was a way to easily splice into the wiring going to the fuel pump, so i could by pass the ignition. temporarily with direct hook up to battery.

One more moral:

Go buy yourself a couple of yellow diesel cans.

I worked for a guy doing tree work. Diesel trucks, diesel chipper, 2 stroke saws, and sometimes a 4 stroke quad. He only used red gas cans. It wasn't me that put it in there, but chainsaws don't run real well on diesel. I'm sure that problem and your problem never would have happened with properly color coded cans.

Anyway, glad your Blazer's okay.

I'll bet that you never make that mistake again. :laughing:
We learn from our mistakes... at the rate I'm going I should be smarter than Einstein any day now. :eek:

I store my fuel in old jerry cans. First thing I did when I acquired the diesel ones was to paint the too third yellow.

You know - my diesel is stored in old military jerry cans also. It wouldn't hurt to, at least, paint a big yellow stripe on each.

Yup, yellow paint is fairly cheap and takes little time. :) I have one painted one myself. This makes me think maybe I'll add a yellow stripe to my 55 gal diesel drums.
probably better than gas in your diesel?

Coming home on a camping trip I stopped at a gas station and a guy had almost the same kind of diesel truck I did. I noticed his hood up and a service truck and three guys working to beat the band. He put gas in a diesel dually and tried starting it. They had to purge everything out. I thought to myself, "What a maroon."

Fast forward a couple years I was going cross country and my wife was nagging me to get so diesel at a big truck stop because the price was good. I was irritated by her demands at 11:00 PM but pulled in with the truck and 37' fifth-wheel and commenced to filling. About half way through my wife said the wrong price was on the meter. I stopped and my heart sank. I was pumping premium gas into the new diesel truck. The staff was no help at all and couldn't care less. I happen to have a 1/2" water hose to be able to siphon the tank.
After a couple hours of dicking around I was able to siphon all out except a couple gallons. 20 gal gas and 10 diesel. I filled with the right stuff and didn't have any problems. I learned a lesson there. Show compassion when somebody screws up like that.

It's not all bad, I bought a Zero Turn lawnmower for $200. that would not start. I got it started with ether and it smoked.
Someone had put diesel in it! The fuel smelled like gas but felt oily.
I cleaned it out and it started and ran PERFECT!
The new diesel does not STINK like the old diesel and it will fool a lot of people.

Back to the truck, all you needed to do was locate the fuel pump relay and jump across to keep the pump running.
The relay is there so a stalled (or wrecked) engine won't keep pumping fuel flooding or starting a fire!

I was talking to a local store clerk, she related how somebody had pumped a tank of gas into their BMW diesel. Her boyfriend is an ace mechanic, keeping everyone's forestry equipment running; after determining how much gas they had pumped he told them how much 30 wt oil to add, then to drive carefully to his shop so that he could drain the tank.

googled "96 s10 blazer fuel relay location"

back of glove box. and thinking about it, the turn single relays are in there as well, and only way to get to them, is to pull glove box out. and part of the dash along with it. (had to replace turn turn single relays a few years back) the cover in back of glove box, just a tad to small, to get anything in there to pull the relays out directly. without some special tool
