Diesel/Gas oil specific

I understand the ratings on oil and that oil rated for use in gasoline engines should not be used for diesels because oil the special additives for suspension of particulate and soot , but what about using diesel rated
oils in a gasoline engine ? Don't really think I would use it but would there be any harm or bennifit ?? Just curious more than anything.

Most of the oils I have seen rated for service in diesels, also have the 'S' related ratings for use in gasoline engines. As long as the S rating meets your vehicles requirements, use it. For example, Amsoil Series 3000 has the following API Service Ratings, CI-4, CH-4, CF-2, CF, SJ, SL.

Mike, is there a site we newbies can go to get information on the different service ratings. I go to the store and am sometimes baffeled at to what I am looking at and weather it's the right stuff.

Diesel oils are probably the best thing you can put in your gas engine (as long as they carry the proper API rating). They are designed to handle the harsh and dirty diesel environment, and in comparison, a gas engine is a piece of cake. If you have an older engine that has a lot of blow-by, a diesel rated oil would be a very good choice.

I guess I'm just wondering out loud . I have run Castrol in all my vehicles for years ( except the tractor) with great results. Never burn a drop and there is never any "gook" build up in the valve cover . Assume this is because I get it up to proper temperature to burn off any moisture . If I wanted to stock only 1 oil for all my vehicles and tractors , would Rotella work as well or better in the gasoline engine as it does in the diesel?Would it exceed the lubricating qualities of the Castrol ?

If I were to pick any one oil to run in all my vehicles, it would be a synthetic diesel oil like Rotella or Delvac 1. If I *had* to pick a single conventional (non-synthetic) oil to run in all my vehicles, it would definitely be a diesel oil.

A friend of mine was a former chemical/petroleum engineer for Chevron, and he worked in their lubricants division. To make a long story short, he convinced me that diesel oils are the way to go. To pass the stringent certification tests, the oil manufacturers just can't skimp on anything with those oils.

A little expensive - but I second Mobil Delvac 1. I have a diesel Volkswagen Jetta and 5w-40 Mobil Delvac 1 (at $27 per gallon) is the only thing that goes in it. Luckily I only have to change the oil every 10,000 miles.

I'm not sure I will be quite so discriminating for the brand new New Holland TC24D I just bought. Don't get me wrong - I want to take care of it - just not sure I need to spend $27/gallon of oil for it. After all - it does not have an extended oil change interval like the Jetta does.
