Tractor
John Deere 4110-HST
I am wondering if it is possible to over treat diesel fuel for my JD 4110 tractor. Specically "Power Service PS". The container said it would treat 100 gal. 32Oz. bottle. I think. Somehow I read it as 10 gals. I put better than half the bottle in 5 gals. I am wondering if I am in trouble, and if so; what are the symptons. Should I drain the tank and start over again or just run this out? I really have good eye sight. But somehow I didn't read this right.
Any recomendations, suggestions, or advise will greatly be appreicated. Next time I'll read the directions twice or more.
I ordered the Shop Manual for this tractor. It is the same manual the dealer uses. It should be! It cost $140.00 plus S@H. If I can be any help in answering any questions from this shop manual, I would be happy to do so.
Supposed to be 645 pages and 2 1/2" thick. That's what the lady said when I placed the order anyway.
The ballast box is done. Turned out great.
Thank you for any feed back.

Hmmm

that is 10 times the recommended mix....

It is only 5 gals of diesel plus a little time to get it out...

I'd be for draining to be sure no damage could be done.
If you do not drain you'll always wonder if that might have caused problems down the road - and there will be no way to know really.

If it was just double I wouldn't worry myself - but 10 times !!

tom

just an opinion,,,, I am NOT an engineer chemical or otherwise - but I see no reason to take any chance for such a small amount of money (diesel)

I guess you could capture the diesel in clean container and remix it back in 1/2 gal per 5 gallons added later on....

That should yield approximately the correct mix, If you tank hold more than 5 gallons total then you could just use add the appropriate amount back in at the same ratio 1 : 10

good luck

Concerning your shop manual, it's available on CD from John Deere for about $25. There's another CD (DB1481) available from John Deere for $46 that has all the CUT tractor service manuals on it. I got the DB1481 and have printed off most of the 4210-4410 manual (828 pages).

Concerning your diesel problem, first I would contact PowerService to get their input. Then I would put at least half of the diesel into a container and add fresh diesel to the tank to dilute what's left. This assumes you have spare diesel containers around.

Thanks for the recomendation. It,s what I was thinking, but I guess I wanted someone with more tractor experience to tell that I better drain and delute.
Thank You

Sent a response to your reply earlier, but I don't think it went. Here's another try.
Thanks for the info on the CD available from JD. Will try to cancel the expensive shop manual and get the CD.
Will take your advice and delute the fuel.
Thank You for your response.

The standard treatment amount is one quart for 100 gallons. It does say on the label that it can be increased to increase the cetane level. I can say that I have seen a lot more put in that the required amount by accident more than once. It has never damaged anything. I would not worry about it and just go ahead and use it. I think that the only thing that you will notice different is that the engine will run better.

I never measure exact amounts and usually add more then recomended. I haven't come up with a reason that it could do any damage to my diesel engines. It's wasteful, but should burn just fine.

same for me, you should be fine with your 4110.

I'm a retired chemical engineer, but I don't know what PS fluid is exactly. Normally, they're very high molecular weight polymers if used for fluidity. In our reflineries that used dewaxing aids, which were also good fluidity additives, we used about 0.15%. This amounts to 1 teaspoonful (5cc) per gallon (3781 cc). Think is about the dosage that PS recommends. One thing it does is to lower the fluid point, or pour point, of the diesel.

What I'd do is figure the dilution you have and then to use it as your additive to get the recommended dilution in the fuel that you use. Don't throw it away.

Also, I'd not use it highly concentrated like you have it now. It could cause carbon formation in the combustion chambers and glow plug areas of your diesel. It'd be almost like trying to burn lubricating oil mixed into your diesel.

We've used power service for decades. We've talked to powerservice about every question there is. There is absolutely no harm in using it if you overdid it. Just burn it like normal. It will only be like using supreme unleaded in your car. It will not carbon up anything. In fact they recommend a very high dose to clean injectors or if you have gelled fuel. Fill the tank run it and forget about it. All it will do is help your tractor it won't hurt it.
