The neighbors down the road swear by a mix of 50% diesel fuel and 50% used motor oil brushed on a wood deck as a great wood preserver.
Has anyone else ever heard of or tried this method??

yeah thats been aroud for long time, but here is one big problem with using it. back in the day when it was popular all floors in the house were lanolium or hardwood [ not carpet] if you have carpet in your home look out. when it gets damp the oil rises to the top and you walk on it track it in the carpet and wife gets angry. one other point is when it is damp or raining it is very slick. and if you have kids they will have problems with it to. my opnion it's something that was ok and worked in it's time but not today.

I had a 76 Chevy pickup with a long wheel base step side bed on it. I bought it used for a farm truck. The bed floor was in great shape so every time I changed the oil I mopped some on the wood in the bed. I drove that truck for years and it sat outside all the time and the bed was still in great shape. Agree with Sam, it would be messy.

The stuff is toxic. Bad for you, your family, the soil, the water, etc.
Recycle the oil, please.

I have put it onmy carhauler deck. keeps the wood conditioned and water resistant. Even though the wood is treated it makes it more rot resistant. I used more deisel than 50% though i beleive. I put mine in a pump sprayer and sprayed it till moist. It will smell up your yard for awhile as it will ahve that aroma on the trailer for awhile. It is slick when wet for several months and you will track it in if you dont take off shoes. The stuff wont be good on a hardwood floor either!! But if you scuff your shoes off on concrete or just take them off its not bad.

My farmer friends use it on wood fencing and another on the sides of a log home...

It was only a few years ago the county was still oiling gravel roads to keep down the dust...

Asphalt is oil and aggregate for the most part.

A few years back we visited my inlaws who live in a very rural part of NC. The main road to their house is paved but DOT or the county had just resurfaced the road in a strange way. It looked like they had just dropped gravel on the road and the laid down a oil/tar base on top of the gravel. Can't remember what it was called though. We asked my FIL who is a retired DOT inspector. He knew of course but I can't remember what he said. The oil/tar was thicker than say motor oil yet thinner than roofing tar.

Dan that is "Chip & Seal" for normal names, it is done a lot in Ohio too, most of the rural roads are done this way with a tar/Oil/gravel mix they toss in some hot patch in the pot holes in spring, hit it with a roller and then spray down the oil/tar mix to about 1/4" thick with a chip truck dumping 1/2" of fine crushed lime stone. the stone sinks into the hot tar and sticks there. a good bit of it will remain loose on top and will work it's way to the sides and center and eventually off or into the road bed.

Though I can say Ohio and Road Maintenance is ... NOT very good, almost as bad as Michigan's. 3 years ago they put in brand new asphalt road bed ground up the old asphalt & put down 3' of new. It was NICE, then 2 years ago they came thru and tore out ALL the culverts and half @$$ patched those up. Then last year they came thru and Chip & Sealed the Nice sections of asphalt leaving the road back worse shape than it was 4 years ago!

we have also used motor oil/fuel mix on trailer decks, but NOT Home/decks due to flammability/smell/slick when wet issues of it.

Chip seal (slag) roads are made by shooting AC (Asphalt cement) and the laying a thin thin layer of 1/2" or 3/8" granite in the tack, and using a traffic roller (9 wheel pnuematic tire roller) to firmly press the stone into the tack.

But it used to be quite common to spray limerock roads with used motor oil to keep the dust down, not done anymore by counties but some individuals still do.

If you think asphalt is toxic try throwing a shovel full on some sod, and come back in a week, greenest sod you'll see. Heck look at paved guardrail pad, its ate up with grass.
