What do you think about putting Sta-Bil in diesel fuel for storing it over time? I got my hands on some army "jerry" cans and was going to fill them with fuel so it would be on hand. I put Sta-Bil in my gas already. Also, what is this I was reading about Power Service? Are there any other additives? Thanks

All the threads I have read recommend the Power Service, and that is what I use. Can get a good price on it at WalMart.

Have a great Day, Les

If you are going to store diesel fuel for a long period of time the time of year you purchase it will determine what temperature it was blended for. If you make your bulk purchase in the summer you will need to add something like Power Service to prevent gelling in cold weather.

I add Power Service to every tank of fuel, in the winter for it's anti-gelling properties and in the summer for it's injector cleaning properties.

I don't know if Virgina has two diesel types based on road tax like New Hampshire does. There is an off-road variety which is less expensive as the road use taxes are not charged to the consumer. This fuel is for farmers and construction equipment that is operated off-road, it is a different color than the diesel that has all the road use taxes applied to the selling price.

Just becareful if these "jerry cans" are metal. As the temperature changes there is a chance of condensation collecting in the fuel cans. I have had a metal jerry can rust from the inside out creating a leak in the can, it did take 12 years for this to happen.

It would be wise to store extra fuel in a safe place seperate from your living space.

I use Stanadyne According to what I have read, it is about the best out there. They are certified by most major OEM's. I bought mine from Cummins.

I am going to switch to John Deere's. It is rated within a hair of Stanadyne. It should be great for your Yanmar engine.

That said, I am not saying that PS or Stabil are snake oil or even Slick50...

Thanks to all. I got my diesel fuel in late August and it was off raod diesel fuel. The cans I got are the new plastic ones, real nice, Igot 40 gallons worth of cans but only have 15 gallons of fuel stored. what I've been hearing on Power Service is great. I'll have to check out the other stuff.

I use stanadyne in my tractor and PSD Ford , and Daughters TDI . I've had summer blend fuel that has been in the shed at -5 F that hasn't shown signs of waxing .
I believe any diesel additive will work fine ,
But your initial question was about Sta Bil . I believe that's a gasoline additive . I don't think it would be advisable to add it to diesel fuel . John

I use Stanadyne in my GM Duramax as recommended also in my excavator and tractor. The question though what do the tractor mfg's recommend anything or nothing. On the Duramax site the debate is emulsify or de-emulsify do you want it to separate from the diesel or mix and get burnt with.GM says use stanadyne which is a De-emulsifier which allows the filter to remove.I do not know if our filters are that fine 2~5 microns to remove the water? What I have seen on my old L275 was a small puddle of water on the bottom of the tank maybe a tablespoon {just use a flashlight}which I removed with a hose.Another thing I left my tractor outside one cold day and went to fill the tank and upon removing the cap there was frost on the inside of the plastic tank.Frost on tanks is not uncommon I have seen up to half a inch on the inside of my excavator tank. What I do Is always make sure that the tank is full and less chance of condensation.Anyhow does anyone know what the tractor mfg's recommend for additives, my Kubota book does not seem to say anything.

Deere recommends Deere Brand /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif, and Stanadybe.

If you believe Stanadyne they say Power Service is pretty bad. They have a lot of info on their site, and I decided to switch....

Well stanadyne and "I think" deere are both de-emulsifiers so that makes you think deere for one thinks that you should separate the diesel and water. You have to be careful what additive you buy because emulsifiers mix the water with diesel and burn it.Some auto mfg's will say it causes premature pump and injector wear. This is a important thing in the auto diesel's.I don't know how critical it is with the cut's but it has to make a difference in the long run IMO.Anyhow I find my tractor and truck a lot more quiet due to the cetane boost and I hope not to have gelling or other related problems. And I think separating the diesel and water is a better idea if you are going to use any IMO. As I mentioned above if you take a flashlight and shine it in some tanks, if there is water you can see it.If you see any I would remove it as it is on the bottom by the pick up /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

PRI is the one I've been using for several years. PRI-D is the diesel formulation. The website is http://www.priproducts.com.
I'm still using diesel that was stored in a 2000 gal. tank almost four years ago.
