As we are coming into winter here in Central New York I am thinking of some way to preheat the engine on my CK3510 HC. I asked my dealer when I bought the tractor in August this year if it had a block heater. He told me no and they start just fine without them because of the glow plugs. I have been around Diesel engines my whole life and know that is not true for some. Take a 7.3L Powerstroke and try to start that pig on a 0 degree morning with just glow plugs. I drive tractor trailer and my rule of thumb is if it’s 10 degrees or below when I stop for the night the engine stays running. Anything over that I shut the truck off and use the Espar bunk heater and stay toasty warm. Espar also makes coolant heaters, they are quite popular in the trucking industry and even forestry, oil field etc. They have a burner that uses diesel fuel to heat air for inside like I use at night in the truck, or coolant with a circulation pump to heat the block of a motor. The advantage of this system is that you don’t need power, other than battery power, to warm up the engine if you are somewhere without access to 110v to use a standard block heater. Has anyone here attempted to install one of these on a CUT? Thanks

Never heard of them. Would only need to fire it up about 20 minutes before you needed to start up.

I’m glad you mentioned this as I’m putting an old Hough Pay Loader back into working order and it’s Navistar DT467 engine has no glow plugs whatsoever. While it does have a radiator heat exchanger in the cab, I want more for defrosting windows and the like.

That said, with that small engine in the C35 I think I’d install a Katz inline coolant heater that plugs in rather than the Espar system you’re thinking of.

There is probably a frost plug heater that would be at least as efficient and far more compact than either the Espar heater or a rad hose heater.

As I recall, it is the same part number across the Kioti line-up and available at Bobvcat dealers because it started out as a Bobcat part. Anyway, my NX has it but I also use pre-heater wraps on the hydro filters to get some heat into the hydro trans oil here in northern MN.

Yes, I'm quite familiar with the Espar heaters. All the over-the-highway semis coming thru Glennallen, AK had this or a similar kind.

Block heaters are MUCH more efficient than in the hose heaters, and are much preferred over them...

A block heater would be my first choice...

There is a good reason why all the big semis that run the ALCAN use diesel fired heaters. The Espar heater can heat the cab as well as the engine coolant. It only needs 12V and diesel for fuel.

Units like the Espar are not designed to be used on compact & sub-compact tractors. They are big, fairly complicated and quite expensive.

I have an Espar D5 that I used on an old Mercedes diesel car a number of years ago. Great unit, would have the engine up to temp within 15 minutes most days.

When I junked the car I pulled the heater off and put it on a shelf until the time came to use it again.

May times I thought about putting it on my DK40, but it's always started without a problem even at -30C.

Fitting the heater in was going to be a minor issue. I didn't think under the hood was going to work, maybe at the very front over the battery?

I was thinking that the heater could be attached to the loader brackets as another option.

I have since put the heater on my Deere backhoe so that it will start in the winter so I can't do a mockup fitting.

Bottom line, if you're going to look at something like that, nothing more then a D5 and expect to do some fabricating.

On a tractor that size, you could have trouble finding a place for a block or hose heater, never mind a whole unit like that. Seems, WAY overkill. I have a diesel fired heater that goes in the intake of Deutz Air Cooled motor.

Construction companies used to connect the coolant lines of their service truck to ports on various machines. I think, that's a great idea. Nowadays, antifreeze is so specialized for that.
