I've heard of exhaust gas recirculation on the new engines. Yet I see no evidence of EGR on my '04? JD 4310. Did I just beat a new EPA mandate? If so I'm glad, because although I'm all for clean air, EGR seems like a potential hassel and power parasite. I'm sure you'll correct me if I'm wrong. Greg.

As mentioned EGR and catalytic convertors are new add-ons for heavy diesel trucks. I wouldn't be surprise if the EPA eventually mandates them for off road use too.

I have a shipment of EPA Certified 25hp & 35hp 3 cyl diesel Jinma Tractors coming in and was told that these EPA engines have a EGR Valve.

I dont know how the valves are controlled yet ? I think we will see more on all makes and models. It does add another thing to check for when trouble shooting engine performance.

The biggest issue we see on the on-road trucks is that people think the diesel engine should run continuously. I'f you let it idle, it becomes an air pump(for lack of better terms) and cools itself internally because the airflow is un restricted at all times. This allows the EGR to cool and accumilate large quantities of carbon and stick, causing lack of power and rough running concerns. Bottom line, dont let your diesel run for long periods if your not using it.

I had heard that a bunch of new regulations go into effect in 2007. To meet these new, tighter regs, most engines will have to incorporate EGR into the design.

Thats correct, and fuel is just a part of it.. EGR, Cat's, and more regulated controls on fuel delivery. It sounds scarry, but we went through it in the middle 80's on gas burners, look at the performance gains and fuel economy we got from that. It's the future, gota go with it.

EGR is NOT a good thing. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

You're totally right. People here had a lot of problems with VW TDI engines on cars, 5-6 years ago.
Due to sulphorous diesel, it caused lot of carbon on valves, head, and some motors were need to be disassembled and cleaned /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Problem was solved with nonsulpher fuel. In meantime, most of car owners blocked EGR by closing recirculation channel, replacing copper gasket with copper washer /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
No problems since that.

My 1983 Benz has EGR. No problems with it.
