My son was using our fairly new Dewalt 40V string trimmer in some tall grass, and the grass wrapped around the shaft. He just kept using it and it apparently burned the motor up. Can the motor be rebuilt or would it be cheaper to junk it.

Have you checked on a warranty replacement?

What appears to be the ventilation slots on top of the motor on my 20V get clogged in short order. So far it hasn't seemed to hurt it but I know it would last longer if the motor could cool.

I'm pretty sure it has been over a year, and don't know where my receipt is. It was our fault and nothing to do with the trimmer. The motor was smoking, so pretty sure it is burned up. Let it cool overnight and this morning it would barley spin. What is a good replacement brand. Dewalt no longer sell this model...

I would like to find a good electric string trimmer. I have the 20V DeWalt which is adequate, but I want something with more power.

My 40v had plenty of power, but they don't sell that model anymore. They have a 60V now which I think would have more power.

Well after that experience, I would not buy another DeWalt. A good design on an electric motor would include some sort of temperature sensing on the motor itself and would shut the unit down until the motor cooled.

Never hurts to ask. These circumstances may warrant an exception.

I asked, and they said that Dewalt no longer makes this model, but since I had a problem they could sell me the upgraded 60V model for $152.54. That is cheaper than I can purchase it from HD, so I took the deal. The problem is that they said they do not have it in stock, and it is on the boat from (guess where) China. Said they had 10,000 ordered but do not know when they will arrive. Got my paper work from Lowes and showed I purchased it in June 2018. Said regular warranty was for 1 year.
