Flail Mower Del Morino Flipper Hammer Flail Mower

Anyone have experience with Del Morino flail mowers? I'm considering a flail mower as slightly safer alternative to a bush hog for keeping down grass and chopping up some brush. One local dealer sells the Del Morino Flipper FLI186M, a 74" mower with hammers rated for brush up to 1.5". I've only seen Del Morino mowers mentioned a couple times on the forums.

If you go to youtube and type in Del Morino flipper you will have a
video come up that shows an offset Del Morino flipper chewing up
some nasty cornstalks leaving a nice flat corn field behind it.

The Del Morino Company has been making farm machinery in Italy
for 130 years. You will have a very safe mower that will work well
for you and conforms to the much more stringent European Farm
equipment standards for mowers.

I purchased the centurion super 158. Although I have had limited experience with it, I am very pleased to date. I purchased mine with knives for mostly grass, however, I have been trimming field edges and it has no problem in brambles and small trees and brush. Literally eliminates them and leaves behind nothing but mulch.
As leonz notes, they have been around for a long time and it's evident in every aspect of the mower. By the way, when it comes to flail mowers leonz is like yoda. Master of the flail force.

You can have either the flail hammers or the side slicer knives.

I would just invest in the side side slicers for now if you are ready to buy and
get used to the flail mower over the summer and fall and then decide it you want
flail hammers for it.

Also keep in mind that with the flail hammers you will have less cutting edge in total
inches per foot of width of cut. The side slicer pairs will have more total cutting edge
length in inches per foot of mower width and you can flip the knives to expose a new
cutting edge.


Using a wet well grinder for maintaining the cutting edge will save you time and money
and will not overheat the knife edge and ruin it.

The MicroMark folks have a wet well grinder for $99.00 and its perfect for flail mower knives and
hammer flail cutting edges.

JUST keep in mind the hammers will not shred the brush/material a second time
and the side slicers will shred the material up a second time as long as the
mower is set up with the mowing height set at 2 inches or lower.

When mowing in good sod you will be able to mow it once but not recut it a
second time.

ideally if you have brush clumps its best to back over them and then drive
forward to shred them up even finer as the rear roller will help you a lot in that situation.
islandtractor has plenty of before and after images showing how well the B flail rotor on his B59 Caroni flail chews up the big brush clumps with immature weed trees he is clearing off the farm that he owns.
