So Uncle Don just took a axe to the CAFE regulations for autos and light trucks.. Long over due... But it's ending. Will that get rid of the nonsense of EGR valved and DPF on diesels in the next year or two ?

I have seen up close and personal the devastation the cooled EGR does to diesel engines. That was mandated in 2004.5. Many people don’t know about those. More focused on is the DPF (2008) and DEF (2012) are after-treatment systems that are expensive to maintain and full of expensive failure-prone sensors and electronics as well as physical hardware that wears-out.

It’s all crap, makes all our lives more expensive (even if you don’t own a diesel) and less necessary now that diesel engines runs so much cleaner and more efficient today than just 20 years ago without all the mandated pollution crap.

Unfortunately, this is unlikely to have much, if any effect. The mfgs have international standards to meet, too. They also know that those changes are unlikely to hold up for long.

At the very least, the rules shouldn't apply to tractors and other farm machinery

Bah. Manufacturers have been making different pollution standards vehicles for 40 years. California has had different emissions vehicles than the rest of the states, so manufacturers can (and do) build vehicles with different emissions for other countries.

Not if Congress passes it as law.

That’s your opinion and you are entitled to it and I actually agree with you, but the pollution equipment on OTR diesels costs society too much. Juice ain't worth the squeeze.

So far, Congress has been unwilling to codify much in the way of EOs or regs.

Less likely in 27-28.

Most mfgs haven't made separate OTR vehicles for CA emissions in years. They essentially make all of their vehicles comply with the stricter standards. A bunch have already committed to continue to do so.

There are some small engine places that make separate versions for CA.

I agree that most of the diesel rules are silly. It just seems easier to get consensus on off-road AG vehicles to be excluded.

Probably because other issues like the economy, borders, Ukraine war, etc are higher up the list than DPF/DEF is in Congress.

We shall see, right? I agree mid terms don’t usually go the way of the current WH occupant, but maybe they will get it passed while majorities remain favorable. Neither of us know.

But the point is, it WAS done for many years, so they can make separate emissions systems for other countries.
If England still wants $10,000 worth of unreliable junk on the ass end of every diesel engine, great. We can put it on for them. Meanwhile the US version gets a muffler and a tailpipe.
It’s also a great opportunity for truck/equipment manufacturers to make more money. Once the emissions equipment is removed, no one will know how much the production price will drop, but you and I both know they won’t pass all the savings onto the consumer.
It’s a golden opportunity for them to increase profits.

Yeah for sure. It also points out the absurdity of making a guy with a small vegetable farm running a small tractor have to pay $10,000 extra to reduce pollution, when pollution levels have already been greatly reduced.
Today’s diesels run very clean. They make much less emissions without the extra equipment.
