From my local paper. Deere and Company will lay off about 300 employees, close the Williamsburg Va. and Jeffersonville Ind. facilities, and reduce operations at the Horicon Wis. facility. This is an effort to lower costs in Deere's Commercial and Consumer Equipment Division. Employment at the Horicon plant will be reduced through a special retirement incentive, and about 100 jobs will be transferred to Fuquay-Varina, N.C.
I guess when you build something that lasts, eventually you won't sell as many! /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Well not exactly. Deere is moving more of their operations to Mexico. I'm really ticked about that and there is a letter going in our community, as this is where deere's headquarters is, that is letting deere know that if they keep sending jobs to Mexico and everywhere else that we will not support them anymore. The letter states that we don't mind paying more for a quality product but not when it's made in a foreign country. It's a huge issue locally.

I wish that a letter from Southeastern Michigan residents to the big three would keep our livelihood intact. I just dont see it working but still, I commend you.

Oh I'm sure it won't do any good either but right now there are 2800 signatures on it. That has to at least get their attention a little bit.

Here's what started the commotion locally.

John Deere plant losing some employees due to production line being moved to Mexico

(Dubuque, Iowa-AP) -- John Deere has closed a tractor engine production line in Dubuque to move it to Mexico. Some 400 employees at the Dubuque, Iowa plant were warned of the move two years ago. Company spokesman Ken Golden says 30 of them will continue to work on crankshafts at the plant until the end of the year. The Dubuque plant will remain open, having won new were from a skid-steer loader line previously based in Tennessee. Golden says engine-production employees will get training for new jobs at the plant. The Moline-based company is moving its engine production to Torreon, Mexico.

Congrats on the letter Cowboydoc. Some people would argue that this is smart business, but I think its greed. You put an American Worker out of work, and move to Mexico to make more profit. But you forget the person you put out of a job isn't buying anymore. Seen it happen too many times. Good Luck with the letter. Kent

"You put an American Worker out of work, and move to Mexico to make more profit."

Yeah...NAFTA was a rape of the American worker. I know this will be controversial, but unions didn't help either.

Until our esteemed members of Congress see their jobs disappearing, those fools will roll over for big business...roll too much. Then they'll wonder where the tax base went.

However, I think losing all those manufacturing jobs, as well as the continuing quality problems stemming from the Mexican work forces (I work in automotive Quality...I see them everyday) will not bode well for Deere. Now, we gotta remember that Deere sell a lot of Japanese built tractors (including my 670). But the Japanese do build quality product.

Boy..I tell ya one thing, I won't buy a Mexican built Deere.

Well, that ought to help keep my fair state in it's current position of leading the entire nation in unemployment.

Yet we buy them with Yanmar engines... Curious...

Isn't Dubuque where they used to make Johnny Poppers like the M, 40 and 320 etc. ?
