My tractor has a leak that is where the transmission meets the housing the that 4 X 4 selector is. These 2 housings are bolted together with 6 bolts. Has anyone had this section apart? How hard is it and how long will it take to separate these 2 sections and apply either gasket sealer or something to stop the leak?

The tractor has a Deere loader and the external hydraulic filter

Hi jagyzf, welcom to TBN.:)

Not sure on your tractor leak, although I seem to remember a couple guys have 'em on here. Can you take a picture and post it on this thread? Could help somebody answer your question.

Do you have a repair manual?

I do have a shop manual, it seems to cover breaking the tractor at the clutch housing, then jumps right to transmission tear down. I does not seem to cover very well this joint. What I would like to do is just pull it apart enough to get gasket sealer in the joint then pull it back together.

That's a bad place for a leak, although with the tractor split the fix would probably be easy.
Having the time to separate the tractor, having a means to support both halves at the same time, while not extremely hard it could be classified as a "pain in the a**" . If you have a clean hard surface, some jack stands, a chain fall or other means of lifting heavy wieghts from above, a bunch of 2x4 sections for wedges, a grasp of basic mechanics-go for it.

Have you looked in "parts look up" on John Deere site? I don't have any time right now-but here's a link see if you can find the seal in an exploded view.
John Deere - Parts Catalog

Good luck....

I will try to post a pic of the case from JD. It shows a front seal that may be the problem. If you do split the tractor "remember" the front half pivots on the axel so you need to wedge the front end or make some sort of stands to prevent tipping the engine assembly over sideways.

On a previous post you asked about weak points I had to replace my front MFWD seals because they rusted through and started to leak. I also notice my tractor a 1984, 850 with a few hundred hous on it when I bought it, was split in the same spot yours is leaking from. The previous owner may have had the same problem.
