john deere 790
i would like to be convinced why i should pay 14000 for the 790 4 wheel, 419 loader. i can get the 1428 with loader for 13500. is the 790 better or just green? please be honest i have no brand loyalty (except to u. s. made products) since all are made overseas. i really do not like no name products. i have good dealer support on both brands.

Owned a Massey HST 1233 tractor and was very pleased with it. I think the quality of Massey is the same as DEERE. I am not sure if the 790 has a Yamar engine or not. Massey uses Iseki engines and I think they run quiter and smoother than Yamar. That was on of the factors that led me to Massey compared to a similar Deere HST model. The price of the Massey was cheaper even for a few more horsepower. I don't know how the gear shifting compares to the DEERE. However if the are about the same I would definitlely go for the Massey. I think you will be pleased with it especially if you have a good dealer.

Have you been on both tractors? They are a world of difference between them. The 1428 is a newer design that is smoother to operate, better lay out of controls and has a lot more room in the operator area. Given the prices that you have received, there is no comparison.

The 790 not only has the Yanmar engine, the entire tractor is built by Yanmar just as the Massey is built by Iseki.

I owned a 790, prior to buying my current 990. A very close friend purchased the 1428v Massey. He has had nothing but problems with his machine. He has driven both, and had used my 790. He told me that he felt that the 790 had it all over the 1428. One of his biggest complaints was with the loader on his 1428v. He also said that JD felt more "rugged" and seemed so in its construction. I'm aware that that is all subjective, but I'll tell you this, his 1428v is sitting, broken, in his yard, while my 790 went on to bigger and better things.
I had tried both machines when I was looking. I liked the "feel" of the JD better. Also, I knew that the resale is better for the JD machines. If you ask someone about a tractor, the first words out of their mouths is, most often, "like a John Deere?!"

The dealers should let you go try both. When I bought my Cub Cadet, the dealer had a pile of gravel out back for prospective buyers to "play" in. Each tractor manufacturer (in my mind) has at least one thing on their machine that you will like better than any other. Go make a list of pros and cons for each and then decide! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

After all has been said go and drive both tractors. It will be apparent which one you will want for the money. I had MF 1250 and put over 1200 hours on it in 4 years, I now have a MF 1440 which is close to the same tractor. It is a strong rugged built tractor and the loader works fine. No matter which tractor you look at there will be someone that has a brother, neighbor or someone that has had a lemon or a tractor that they didn't like. Go back through the archives and you will see what I say. But, in todays market they are few and far between. One other thing, in todays market sometimes the dealer is as important as the brand or model of tractor. You have to get a tractor and a dealer that YOU are happy with.

I bought a 1428v hydro with the 1464 fel earlier this year and have not had any issues with it. I'd strongly recommend the 1428v.

As everyone says, try'em both and see which one fits you better.

Wow the Massey guys really chime in here! Well, I like both tractors and if I DID NOT have a Deere I would be on a Massey. I had a 790 before trading in for the 4300 and it was a nice little machine. Too small for me and I had the bigger 30 horse motor in there. The Massey is roomier but the Deere is a time proven design that has been around for over a decade!
