Hello everyone!

Recently got a Deere 4100 4x4 hydro and discovered a very bad oil leak just above the front, right final gear drive. When I put oil in the fill hole on top of the front axel it all ran out of the seal (see diagram attached) until oil wouldn't even read on the dipstick. So I decided to replace the seal.

When I got it apart and started pulling the old seal off, a metal elastic ring (much like a rubber band) came out below the seal and I cannot figure out where it goes because the parts diagram does not show anything like it. The seal I am replacing is #22 on the diagram.

I have attached a jpg of the diagram and a photo - the metal ring I'm talking about is on top of the shim I'm holding in my hand. Could it be that this metal ring was inside the old deteriorated seal?

Any help is appreciated, thanks! -RM

Looks to be the spring out of the lip on the grease seal

That is exactly what it is. It keeps the seal in constant contact with the proper tension to eliminate leakage.

Your new seal will already have it inside.

Discard it.

Okay, thanks! And do you guys know if the new seal just fits down in joint or will I have to drive it in? (This is my first time). Also, I don't need to use any kind of adhesive on this like you would use gasket sealer on a gasket, right?

I replaced a similar seal on my Yanmar 169d and it did require some force to press the seal into place. I recall using a ball peen hammer and lightly tapping it into place. A small rubber mallet may do the trick as well. :)

Got it replaced. Went right in with a rubber mallet. So far no leaks, looks good. Thanks again for your help!

So long as the bore was clean you should be just fine. Most seals have a coating on the outside that is put on as a sealer.
