Deere 1070 jerks when let clutch out

Hi Folks,
My first post here! Joined forum to see if I could get some help with my 2000 deere 1070 (39hp) tractor w/1100hrs...

My current problem involves the tractor jerking (lurching?) when I let the clutch out. The clutch has about 1 inch of free travel at the top.. when I let the clutch out, the tractor does nothing until the last little bit of travel.. then the clutch engages almost all at once and the tractor jerks.
There is also a strange "burrr" kind of sound.. almost like a cell phone vibration type sound only deeper in tone when the clutch is disengaged.

Any suggestions?

It sounds like your clutch is near the end of it's life. If the noise you hear is only while the clutch pedal is held down, the throw-out bearing or pilot bearing is bad. Clutch engaging at top of travel means clutch disk is near worn out.

Thank you for the reply.. So my next questions are:
1) What is the ballpark figure to have a new clutch put in? How much should I expect it to cost?
2) Is it a difficult job for someone to do themselves? I understand the tractor has to be split and I'll have to fabricate some jack stands for it.

Anyone know what a new clutch cost?

Clutch parts from Deere for this model is unfortunately pretty expensive. Clutch disc alone is $600.00. From A&I it is $140.00. Complete clutch/pressure plate is over $2500.00. Unfortunately, more than a disc is usually needed and a complete clutch assembly is not available from A&I. PTO clutch and plates may be needed as well. Average JD parts to rebuild original clutch will run around$1500.00 or so depending on what you need. Pilot bearing is under 50 bucks and pilot bearing is under 10 bucks. Figure 8 - 10 hours labor depending on what equipment you have(loader, cab, etc.) Hauling fees, etc. would be extra. Doing it yourself is not all that hard if you have mechanical skills and tools to do it. There are a couple of specialty tools to align the clutch discs and adjust the fingers, but the job is possible without them.

Thank you very much for the info. Your statement about it not being all that hard to do for someone with a bit of skill is very encouraging. I am an engineer and machine builder so mechanical stuff doesn't scare me... I was mostly worried about some unknown specialty thing that only a dealer would have access to.

Is this the clutch plate I need?

What is your opinion on the re-manufactured units? Ebay has them also for about $800.. Good as new? Or hit and miss quality?
