I'm looking at a 1984 1050 2wd with a bush hog and a harrow for $4,700. It has turf tires and it has 3600 hours on it. I have attached a picture of the tractor.

I have just started researching the 1050 model and really have not been very successful with finding many reviews so I have a few questions that hopefully all you experts can answer.

I will want to use it to till and plant about 4 acres, bush mow another 3-4 acres, and all the misc. stuff that you do in 2-3 acres of woods with paths. I also have a nice long gravel drive that needs grading.

Our remaining acreage is leased out so I don't have to do anything with that.

Will this be enough tractor to accomplish the above?

Am I better off with MFWD or will 2wd suffice?

How available are used attachments, such as a bucket and rear box blade?

What is your overall opinion of the 1050 model?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

The 1050 will do those things quite easily...
4wd is always nice, but 2wd gets it done 99.5% of the time. The only time I've really missed 4wd is carrying a full bucket of dirt across soft areas.

Rear attachments are very common using cat 1 3pt size.

The factory JD model loaders have been out of production for quite awhile, although adapters will let you use a newer jd or of course an aftermarket brand loader will go right on there.

I like my 1050, big enough to do some work and small enough to fit most places. The engine, trans and hydraulics have been flawless.

Looking at the pic, that one has the power steering option... A big plus if you put a loader on.

Somebody else chime in... I seem to collect odd things but surely someone else has a 1050?

Well I don't have a 1050 but my nephew has one and pulls a small square baler with it and it does a great job. He says it is a great tractor.

I think it would do everthing you mention.

Good luck PeterT

I had a 1050 with 4wd that I sold about 8 yrs ago because I didn't think I needed a tractor anymore. Used it to grade roads and move snow. It was a great tractor. I have a 790 now, which although significantly smaller, I like also. The 790 has a better loader and I have a box blade now so I can't really compare the two in the work they could do. The 1050 started easier, had more power and also had a cab option.

Thanks to everyone for the responses. I bought the 1050 and it is being delivered today. I had it taken to a repair shop for a once over before delivery and the owner of the shop offered me $8k for it. I didn't spend months searching for a deal to turn around and sell it.

Looks like I have a full day of playing with my new toy this Saturday.

Thanks again.

I have a 1050 I bought used in 1986 that had 260 hrs on it, but it had been used to clean a feed lot, so the hood and fenders were rust cakes. A friend who owns a body shop cut out the bad steel, replaced it and painted those parts whith imron paint. I maintain a small farm with it, mowing about 25 acres several times a year, as well as cleaning barns, scraping roads, pulling a manure spreader and many other tasks. The 1050 has performed flawlessly.
The only part that failed early was the speedo/tach/hourmeter, which I had repaired. The case had rusted through because of its previous life which caused the guts to sieze. My farm is very hilly(being in the foothills of the Smoky mountains) and the tractir handles everything I put it up to.
I don"t think you can go wrong.

Galena2,
Welcome to TBN and congrats on the tractor purchase. My boss just recently purchased a 4WD 1050 with around 3000 hours on the clock and he just loves it.

On a personal note, I grew up in SE Iowa and as a boy scout attended the 14th and 15th annual U.S. Grant Pilgrimages held in Galena in 1968 and 1969. No my memory is not that good, I have the patches and medals I checked for the years.
