Good video.

Yesterday evening I saw the first buck near the house this season. Must have been a two-year -old? Antlers had a couple small knobs on top. There is a doe that hangs around all the time, but I hardly ever see bucks. They are looking for dropped apples from my wild apple trees.

That was one lucky deer. The odds of it not making it over the rail, or of not being hit by a car were long.

Two or three weeks ago I saw six deer just past our back deck. Three of them were bucks, ranging from a spike to a six or eight point. They didn't run when I went on the back porch to feed the dog and cat, just slowly walked deeper into the longleaf pines. I bet if I see them during hunting season, they will not be so casual.

Usually, by the end of deer season I have 6 or 8 hanging pretty close to the house, and yep, they are very skittish. I guess they see it as a DMZ. :laughing:

We have about the right number of deer around I think. You see one now and then, but we're not overrun with them. The Lyme Disease is getting nasty around here, so smaller deer populations help with that. I'd guess there are 30-40 deer per year taken here in town on average. There is a contest at the local snack store and tag station for heaviest and biggest rack. They list all the deer taken on a big piece of poster board.

Since I don't farm anymore, the deer don't bother me as much as they used too. Before I got the fence around my garden, they trimmed my peppers for me. And later on they ate the cucumber vines that grew through the fence. But when you are doing it for a living, you will do what you have to do to protect your income. {pea fed deer taste great}

I don't know why, but the deer never mess with my garden--yet, knock on wood. It's not fenced, no scare devices, etc. I can only recall seeing a deer print in the garden once, and that was out of the growing season.

It could be that there is plenty of deer browse and such, they have no need to risk coming that close to the house. The garden is about 40' from the house. The dogs make them edgy too, even though the dogs cannot get to the garden. I guess the deer aren't willing to chance that.

When the deer are hungry in late winter, there is nothing to eat in the garden, so they don't get into the habit of feeding there? Deer are supposedly very habitual critters, use the same paths, feeding areas year after year, etc. I know they use the same snow trail across the woods every winter.
