I have just shooed the deer out of my tomato garden for the 3rd time today. I planted 42 tomato plants and have harvested maybe 10 tomaties so far. The deer have never been a problem the last few years here but the old timers say with the weather being so unusually dry, the deer eat more tomatoes to get the moisture. I wonder if anyone has some insight on how to keep these buggers out of the garden?

Thanks,

John

Yep, same problem here. They have destroyed my tomatoes, my sweet corn and my peas. Not much you can do cept put an 8' fence around. There is some lawn sprinklers out there that work on motion and am told that works good. Another thing is to go to you local barber shop and bag up some hair and spread around. But if they are hungry the hair idea won't work.

If you can pose an economic and universal solution to this problem, you will not need to work again.

Have heard tell that hanging a fresh deer hide on the fence every day will solve the problem. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

We are having the same problem this year guys. The deer actually got more of our sweet corn and tomatoes then we did. And what we did get was excellent.

We're planning some sort of an electric fence next season since most of the damage has already been done this year.

Use this stuff.

I have had 100% success when I applied it to our Xmas tree plantation. I've had predation when I didn't. I'm sold.

The premixed is much more expensive than the you-mix-it version, but mixing it is not pleasant. It is made out of bloodmeal. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Search the web for your best price.

I see there is a dealer nearby for the Plantskyyd repellent, I think I'll try it. I also have an old fence charger laying around, think I'll string that up as well. I'm sure the fresh deer hide trick works wonders too!
I wonder if one charged wire about waist high would do the trick? They'll probably figure it out after they get popped a few times, I'll let you know.

Thanks,

John

I wonder about the motion detector sprinklers. There was a post about them not to long ago. Wish I could find them on the web.

Second hit on Google when searching on "motion detector" sprinkler.

I have been using the same electric fence that I string up every year around my 30'X80' garden. I use a 3' piece of rebar spaced every 5' or so & two strands of wire, one just about 6" off the ground & the other 12" off the ground. I usually leave it on for the first 3 weeks or so & then am not bothered again until the corn is getting ready, then I turn it on again to keep the coons & deer out.
