I know they are rated for 9 feet, but is that realistic?

I would assume it has to be a trench-like hole to get the boom down low enough?

I need to do a Perk Test and am thinking about using the BH-90 instead of paying some else to come in. I did a test dig down to about 6 feet and found nothing but sandy soil.

Funny thing....when I was done with my test hole my wife got a crooked smile..... I asked what it was for, she shook her head and said nothing. After a few more minutes of prodding she finally came clean. She said it was kinda scary and funny... "a hole 6 ft deep, big enough to bury a wife in". Then with a wink, I told her she better stay on my good side! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You should be able to dig the full 9' and maybe a little more. The spec's are measured with the BH90 mounted on a 5030.
I would be careful; your wife may have been watching to see how to dig a hole with your tractor. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Chris, I got down to 8' 6" without really trying. See photo.
The front of the tractor was lower (downhill) which raise the BH slightly.

The size rating for backhoes (8', 9', 11' etc.) has a specific meaning that the manufacturer's association has adopted. It is the depth, below the level surface the tractor is on, at which the device will produce a flat surface 2 feet long.

As a practical matter, an observation pit for our state (MA) is specified to be 8' below grade - which can be measured to the lowest point - doesn't have to be flat-bottomed. So a BH90 would do a fine job.

LOL Ron, You may be right!

Though if she has any doubts, my 10 year old son could easily dig the hole.... and she does know how to use the FEL.... Oh never mind, she would never... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

TXDon, did you dig that hole just to find out, or was that a past dig?

Thanks guys. I ordered up the perk test and I'll be out at the property in a couple of hours digging a couple of holes.

In my test dig I hit nothing but sandy soil that was bone dry after 2 days of rain/drizzle. I should be okay... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
