Hey. Hope you are all well and wondering if I can get your advice. I have started to tame a woodlands farm of about 28 acres in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The property is mostly mountain woods but has three small meadows and cleared land around the old farm house. The farmhouse is a small split level on a sloped land at the valley of my property. Presently I have a tiny pond fed by one of the many mountain springs and plan on converting a bog of about 2500square feet into a larger pond. My son has bought ten acres-also primarily wooded, nearby (ten miles) and together w/him we figured that we needed a tractor. I can mow the land around the house w/a Sears 25 hp kohler mower, but the rest of the property needs a tractor for bushhogging , log removal and road maintenance. I would love to save money and get a used ford or JD, but figure that I need 4wd, independent PTO and ROPS together with a FEL and bushog. Am leaning toward Kubota 3010, JD 4200 or Massey Ferguson 1240 or 60. What do you folks recommend? The reason I think I need 4wd is that my son and I use it on our trucks in order to get equipment to the lower section of our house. I have a line on a Massey Ferguson 231 w/FEL and 6 foot bushog for about 10K (230 hours) but it doesn't have 4wd. Any and all advice will be welcome.

Very tough to make specific recommendations without knowing lots of details about the intended uses (and we all find lots more uses after we get a tractor than we thought about before buying), but to start with, I think you're right in looking at the L series Kubotas (and comparable models in other brands) and I agree that you will not likely be happy with what you buy if it doesn't have 4WD and a front end loader.

My experience will tell you to get all the loader lift ability you can. A debate is going on around how to classify tractors like the Kubota 2910 vs JD 4200 or 4300 vs L3010 etc., Besides price and physical size, price probably having as much as anything to do with it, I like to have a lot of loader. The only problem I would have buying a JD right now is that they are coming out with a whole new line up for the 4000 series in fall or winter. Personally, I would have to wait for those before I could buy. You are quite correct about having 4WD. I stick my 2WD all the time in situations where 4WD would have taken care of me. A loader becomes much, much more powerful and useful in 4WD. I like the Kubota L3010 over the smaller 2910 simply because it starts getting into bigger dimensions, bigger seating area, bigger physical size. Rat...
