Dealers, arrghh

Went to the dealer to pick up my drive axle seal. Told them i needed oil for the front end as well. I didnt check my book and just asked them how much I needed. They flip open the book and say 9.8gal ! For just the front axle, I say. No thats the complete fluid change. I ask how much just for the front axle since thats what im working on. THey werent sure, and they didnt know which oil to use. Said i had to verify what was on my filler cap.
I open my book at home and find out its just 1.3 gal and they type right in the manual. Why couldnt they do that? Now I have to go back, arrgghhh.

I hate to say it.. but today's counter people are pretty much the same mechanical calibur as the teller at a supermarket ( no offense ).. IE.. they can take your money, and can look something up on a computer screen.. and that's about it.

Occasionally you run across a few that can even open an application book. then.. once in a blue moon you actually find one that knows his stuff.. etc.

When i got get filters for my tractors i take the numbers with me and cross check them with what i am handed when I tell them what my application is.

Since i have fords.. they are usually pretty good with the oil filter since alotta ford products use the same one.. etc.. however fuel, air and hyd are anybodies guess unless you actually take the numbers with you.

Tried a new dealer. Just for the heck of it, I asked what and how much i needed. Took a bit for him to find the correct book but he got the quantity correct. Got it all put back together. As Im ready to add the fluids, I shake the jug and sounds almost like water in there. The jugs say JD low viscosity Hygard. Hope its the right stuff. Deffinately different/lower viscosity than what I took out.
