Tractor
looking to buy
I have been scouring this forum a while and it has been very helpful. I am looking for a tractor for my newly started vineyard,2ac for now and surrounding ranch land. My nearby dealer,60 miles, sells NH and recently, 2yrs or less Mahindra. There is also a very small LS , TYM and golf cart dealer, 35 miles away but I am not sure about the service.

The NH dealer loaned me a used NH Boomer 50 hst, 2013 w/90 hrs and 23K, to try out that worked great, but is too much tractor for my needs.I never got into the 3rd range. Decided I want a cab, but have not decided on the brand.Usually its hot, windy and dusty here @ 5000ft. Will be utilizing a disc harrow, forks(lifting 1000lb bins)and brush hog on flat grassland.

Look forward to advice. Looked at a 1538 Mahindra with cab today the NH dealer who loaned the Boomer quoted me $32,060 for cab and FEL. This dealer has great customer support.

Just FYI, that Boomer 50 was actually built by LS (R4047). A new one went for under $23K in most places before they changed to the XR series. Right now, buying a NH or Case SCUT/CUT makes no sense when you can buy the same machine for $5-10K less from the manufacturer.

3rd range is really only intended to be a transport gear. I ran an R4047H for 15 months and only put it in high range when I was driving down the street to my neighbor's place.

Dealer is very important, but yes, many smaller tractors com from same place are at least have major shared components. If your NH dealer is good, may well be worth it. Especially if you can't or don't like doing your own maintenance.

And get more tractor than you think you need IMO.

Thanks GManBart and Skyfish25. Great info! Looking at used from dealer, but in my area it's like trying to find a gold nugget. Good deals are gone quick.

Dealer quoted me $23,000 for the used 2013 NH Boomer 50 HST. Also quoted $32,060 for a new 1538 Mahindra HST Cab. Have not checked out the LS dealer prices yet. Probably this weekend.

The price on the 38 horse Cab sounds high...should have a backhoe included for that kind of coin IMO.

IMO... as a dealer who sells multiple brands, your experience with a tractor will only be as good as the dealer your working with. You can read the most glowing reviews of a product, but the if the dealer does not know the ropes keep your fingers crossed. Tractor companies do not provide customer support themselves.

If you want a cab, check out the LS XR models. They have a wide range from around 30 up to 55 HP in HST compacts. You can probably get into one for under $25k

the 1538 price does sound high, but there are several prices depending on financing schemes or cash payments.

When I was looking, last summer, the 3016 with fel/bh was around $25 and change before the haggle, cash price. The 3616 with cab/fel/bh was around $35k. Cabs aren't cheap.

He has to pay the $3k premium for the new models to start with.

Add a bh to his price and you'd be around $37-38k and it's not far from the 16 series prices, based on the new price increases.

If you want a tractor in this new world of TIER 4, you gotta pay the piper. Thank you EPA.

I'd recommend that you go to the good dealer that has good customer service and make the best deal you can on the tractor you want, whichever tractor that is. Do some research on prices so you have some idea of the going price range for any particular tractor.

If you're buying used, look on tractorhouse.com to get an idea of asking prices for any particular tractor, but keep in mind those are asking prices and the actual sales prices may be (and probably are) a little lower.

Be aware that on forums like this, you'll always find a few guys that got an absolute bargain on a tractor some time some where. In my searches for tractors, I've never run across any of those bargain deals. Also, tractor prices have appreciated quite a bit over the years, so beware of people telling you what they paid 9 years ago. Figure out the price range for what you're interested in and then look for a good, solid tractor within that range.

I believe Dealers are important, I almost paid more for a JD because of a good big Dealer with great inventory being closer but that dealer ended up going out of business.
