With our rocky Massachusetts soil, it seems I'd be much better off with the Danuser "Hole Digger" auger than the Leinbach auger/PHD. I've looked over the archives, but it's still not obvious to me whether I would need to get the full Danuser package (G20/40+auger), or whether I could use the Danuser auger with something like the Leinbach L7300, L7200, or L7200JR. My tractor is a Massey Ferguson 1532.

The tractor is not the problem! It is the auger drive shaft style and design. There are hex shafts and round and three options total that I'm aware of. I like the hex shaft if the shear pin is on the drive shaft but other wise you get two size of round shafts to select from if that is the placement of the shear pin.

I understand there are adapters you can put on the Danuser to accept different augers.

So according to Glenn Danuser, if the Leinbach has a 2" round output shaft using a 1/2" bolt they should work together. According to a much older thread here:
. The Leinbach auger, as well as the Speeco, attaches with two bolts that are at 90 degrees to each other and a few inches apart (vertically) on the shaft.

Thanks.

I don't know if this difference would be a problem using the Danuser auger or not. More generally, are there other problems with using using a Danuser auger with a cheaper PHD? My hope was to upgrade the auger without having to upgrade the whole package. The Danuser auger will probably be about $400 or so, but the matchin G20/40 PHD would be another $1200, while the Leinbach PHD (with auger included) is less than half that.

Of course, "you get what you pay for" applies as always -- my question is whether I can get away with just upgrading the auger or if I really need a better quality PHD as well. The reason for upgrade isn't volume or frequency of use -- the issue is rocky New England soils.

Will this be a 3-point drive on the rear or hydraulic drive on the front of your tractor? Tractors are much harder to steer that skid loaders, and the ability to reverse the auger comes in handy in rocky soil. Note that you cannot push down on the auger with the 3-point. I rent a skid loader when we need to drill holes because it is so much faster.

A post hole digger is pretty much a post hole digger. You let the clutch out and it spins an auger. Lower the three point and it digs a hole. Regardless of brand they all pretty much work this way. Augers make a huge difference. I think these days augers are pretty much interchangeable between brands. I have a Bush Hog post hole digger and their augers have "Bear Claw" teeth. These are staggered like chain saw teeth. These augers are far better than any I have used before.

A couple of things.

A down pressure kit allows one to put down pressure on a 3 pt PHD and are available for most PHD.

I have yet to see a 3pt hydraulic PHD, but they are available.
