custom wheel loader

I know it looks funny, but it really exists. More than one manufacturer had backhoes which could be put on their wheel loaders. I want to say Deere had one in the 70's.

The more I think about it, I believe Hough (International) had a Wain-Roy hoe which could be mounted on their payloader in the 50's or 60's.

I didn't want to make any comments until some older fellows had looked at it. I thought my backhoe was a pain to move while trenching! Imagine climbing up and down that thing all day.

You know it! I have seen one in a DOT yard. Seems like it would be like a Swiss Army knife. Not good for any one task.

Hough did indeed make such a rig "back in the day". I saw it operate and talked with operator. It belonged to the County . I do recall something said about it being "top heavy" when roading.

Many companies made them for loaders back in the day. Wainroy was one and Ware machine works was another. The old rear wheel drive HE Houghs had one that was made by Wainroy that mounted on the loader arms inplace of the bucket like a modern skid steer. I cant immagin how crappy they steered as with a bucket of dirt they stunk as it didnt have power steering. THey later made a rear mount for the HE that was more successful.

Allis Chalmers wasw well known for putting a hoe on the back of their loaders. In 2001 I got to operate a pair of 545 AC loaders with hoes on the back. I had a friend that was running a job putting in 18 inch water lines on a restricted ROW. One 545 had a cat walk to the hoe seat and you could walk a straight line to the cab and put it in gear and steer forward. The other had the same cat walk but had a chain box that ran to a sprocket on the the back of the transfer case yoke. It had a small hydraulic motor that attatched to this. On the hoe we had 2 levers, one that ran the motor for moving forward and backward. The other ran a set of lines that teed into the steering cylinders. Usually we just did like a standar sized tlb and shoved ourselves forward.

I have to disagree they are like a swiss army knife and cant do any one thing well. They are still a dedicated loader. They could do some serious digging with the hoe to. THe Army Corp of Engineers had a ton of W14 Case loaders with a Case hoe on the rear and a 4in1 bucket on the front. These were a little agravating THe one I got to run was a surplus rig. The Case loaders at the time had the Cab on the front half of the machine, They were known to have to get out of the cab and on the ground and walk to the hoe. Later I thing they added a travel kit and a an over lapped catwalk.

The local port had an old rigid framed rear steer Hough with an International hoe on the back and it was low slung not good offroad but around the ports roads and streets it was handy for water lines and utility work. Most of these units were destined to work for city road and utility crews on hard or paved un obstructed ground. They were just a way to get more out of an already purchaed unit. It was also one of the bigger types of hoe that was rubber tired.

My only complaint about them mounted this way oter than the overhang was the fact that most loaders fanr blew out the back. It wasnt real bad as long as your eat was mounted to the side a bit. In the winter it was nice but the summer it was lousy. Sometimes in the summer it we werent in dusty weather the fans were reversed. Most time the seats were set to theh side. I n Europe and Asia small wheel loaders are equipped like this now but the operator sits inside the same cab.
