I am working on a 2 7/8" pipe fence across the front of our property. As you can see from the pictures there is a curve in the road. Is this possible to do a slow curve. It is over about 110'. The tape measure shows where I would like to curve it. Any feed back would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Rick

What I feel is the easiest way for someone not used to doing a radius to do would be to first lay out the line with a good water hose.

When the line is laid out then mark off the spacing with marker paint, white works best because the other colors signify utlities. Then I'd paint over the water hose at the space marks. I would make the water hose marks long enough so that after drilling the post holes and the dirt removed I could see the marks clearly. I would set the post using the marks.

Where it gets interesting in radiuses is one glitch of going too far and then having to make an adjustment ruins the whole line. But few things are prettier to see than a properly done radius in a fence line. It's also a great statement about ability and pride.

Thanks, that is a great idea!

Is that top rail going to give me enough flex in it or an I going to have to slice it to make it curve?

I'll post how it comes out.

Thanks again.

Rick

I would set the posts like Harv said then lay top rail along the base of the posts on th outside of the curve and see if you can bend it to the base of the posts, it might spring back so in the center you might have to shim it out from post a little to compensate for spring back.

The way I do a radius top rail like that is I only do two sections at a time. That's because I slice the pipe for the curve on the outside of the radius with a portaband saw. I usually do no more than an eighth of an inch gap per slice. So on a tight radius I might have four or five cuts while on a slow one I might get away with one. Once I get it all tacked in I sew it up.

WITH the slight curve it seems to be in the pic I looked at you can also use some moderately spaced trees to put a slight bend into the pipe, moving & tweeking it slightly many times to get the slight radius you want/need.

depending on thickness of the pipe uses less or more force as needed. also you can use a 1x3 to give the pipe support while tweeking so as to not put a ding/dent into it also go slow as it may collapse easily.

Well, I finished my curve fence section. I used Harvey's suggestion and did two sections at a time and sliced and patched. I am very happy with the results for an amature. It came out nice and smooth. Only 240' of strait fence left and the entry way.

Thanks for the help!

It looks like you got it and you did good.

One of the things that drive me bonkers is seeing a fence that's a series of straight lines when the road itself is a nice radius.
