Ok, So far.. over this last month I have determine dthat it is a 1975 model.

I've fixed leaks in the power steering ( twice ) /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif And have found that when you fix a system with multiple leaks.. the leak just moves on down the line /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Got the electrical mostly straightened out. Had lots of fuses to replace.. got the oil and charge lamp working.. tach works ok. genny works ok.. Lucas regulator is a POS.. but I have fiddled with it enough to make it work.

Got headlamps rewired,a s well as r&r the rear worklamp, and ran new wire to it.

i managed to salvage the OEM 'allied signal' blinker aray that cam on the tractor. neat looking job.. lootks like a big dual lensed lamp, on a stubby perch the size of your balled fist.. setting atop the fender. There is a toggle switch on it to turn it on, and inside, there is a blinker element.

The element and switch were toast.. but i found 'will fit' replacements. Metal was pitted.. but i wire wheeled it down and filled the bad pits with jb weld.. then sanded and primed. looks 90% or better. Got new lenses, and had to make a gasket.

That fender.. the left one was the 'bad' one. Right fender just has surface rust.. no pitts, no extra holes, and no dents.

left fender had a couple / threed dents. 1 crack, and 1 small rust thru. Took about 8 hours work on and off.. but i got the dents pounded out, fliied, and sanded, and then got the fender primed on the side I sanded it. I still need to work on the back side and get it sanded.. but was concerned about the abre metal on the front.

Changed the oil yesterday.. previous owner had stronger hands than me.. I about never got the oil filter off.. Thought I was gonna have to do the screwdriver trick.

I've had the dash cowling off about 4 time trying to get it to fit correctly.... finally made it fit and look good.

Went and got a new stack for it as well. i couldn't stand looking at the floppy swept back one any longer. It was actually too big of a stack.. pipe diamater was way large.. and the prev owner just bent it down to 'kinda' fit.

Got a new grill and decals setting on the shelf for when i get some paint on the sucker.

I've been wondering what was going on. Keep us posted.

1st, I saw your "de-tractors" (pardon the pun) over on YT. Tell 'em where they can stick it! Most everyone is usually interested in the life and times of a restoration. I know I am.

It's just about impossible to find a 30 year old tractor without some damage. Looks like that one actually has less than average abuse showing.

The 5000 I started off with, back in 1974, was a GREAT tractor (until I ruined it) Listening to your adventure has me wanting to re-do one. I'm watching for a good buy on a 5000 myself. Most of 'em up around these parts will be the utility version with 30" rears.

Keep us up to speed on the progress. Keep those boys over on YT informed too. ESPECIALLY the ones that it bothers the most! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I almost gave 'em a lunch update yesterday!!

Yep.. I wanted a 5000 for a while.. saw a mint/cherry one a few years ago.. but the wife talked me into spending 2X the money and getting a 'new' tractor.. that worked out ok.. so I can't complain.

So I've been watchin' for 5000 here lately.. seen alot of beaters, and units with too many implements ( making for too much money ).. and plain high priced units. This one seems to be pretty decent.

Got it's fair share of minor issues.. mostly maintenance issues.

Soundguy, have you seen the 1967 5000 on the cover of the latest Fastline magazine? Mine came in the mail yesterday.

Is that what you have in mind for your tractor?

It is a monthly mag that has ads from hundreds of tractor dealers. I get what they call the Southeast Farm Edition. Most tractor and equipment dealers in my area usually have one laying around some where. They always have a picture of a restored vintage tractor on the cover. Last month they had a 1968 MF 135. I can't find a picture of this month's cover on their website.

Sounds a lot like the hitlist on my '74 Ford 4000, Chris. Mice chewed up the wiring behind the tach a couple of years ago. Finally got it rewired this summer. Those little red lights aren't much, but they're alot better than nothing. Couldn't remember when the fuel gauge and temperature gauge last worked; but they came to life too.

Mine had the wrong voltage regulator in it and I wondered why it needed a new battery every two years. Come to find out the charge voltage was over 16 volts and NEVER cut back. Got the right regulator from Valu-bilt and installed a voltmeter to monitor it. Charge system works good now.

No fenders on mine; no 3pt-hitch arms either. Cobbed together the 3pt. hitch mechanics using generic parts from TSC and Valu-Bilt. Was surprised at how well that worked. A fully functional hitch sure makes the tractor alot more useful.

Haven't tackled the leaky power steering yet...just add fluid. More concerned with the eighth inch or so of runout on the PTO shaft. Wondering whether it would make sense to haul it to the NH dealership for shaft replacement this winter. Tractor will have to be split. Maybe they can replace the clutch and seal up the PS at the same time.

Thanks for keeping us informed. Interesting reading, for me anyway.

I guess each area has a different cover. I do not have this months yet but the last two months were a 64 John Deere 3010 and a 52 Cockshutt 40. I get the North East edition

This is more of a question than an answer. Are you SURE that tractor needs to be split to change the PTO shaft? I've changed a couple on 3000's in a matter of minutes, without splitting. I'm not at all sure about the 4000, although I'd like to own one. Good tractor. (Good friend has a 1974 4000SU. One pullin' hoss!)
