My daughter was mowing earlier this week, said she heard a noise, and the accelerator and brake pedals kind of came loose, hardly any acceleration at all. I took a look, and going from the diagram at http://www.cubcadetpartsnmore.com/uploaded/files/gt2550%20%20769-01479b.pdf, page 4, it looks like the spring labeled 28 is gone. I can get a replacement, but I can't tell from the diagram how to hook it up. It looks like one end goes over the control rod, but I can't tell where the other end hooks. Any suggestions? I'm tempted to just shove a cotter pin in the end and see what happens, but I don't want to damage anything.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

It looks like the small end hooks into the plate which appears to be part of #3 Fwd/Rev Shaft Asm. The drawing isn't the clearest to understand. The dashed lines show the control rod going through #22 Cylinder Damper.

Rod 43 goes through dampener 22 then through the hole in 3 and then the spring goes on and most likely held on by clip 16. the other end of the spring hooks into a what looks like a notch in 3 just below the spring. Unless the rod came out of item 3 I don't think the spring would effect the speed much. I would be looking more at the other control rods for something not right with it.
