2007 Cub Cadet 6284
So I pulled in the garage after some tractorin' to change the oil on the 2007 Cub Cadet 6284 we bought a couple of months ago. It's only got 114 hours, so not even due for the first engine oil change, but I don't like the idea of seven-year-old oil (hydro filters were changed last year).

I drained the oil and took a sample to send to Blackstone Labs, and took the Wix 51085 filter off the shelf. After unscrewing the Cat 150-4140 filter from the engine, I saw that I had a problem. The Wix 51085 is about 5/8" larger in diameter than the filter that came off of it, and there's no clearance near the frame rail for a filter larger than the original.

Cat, Cub Cadet, and everybody else with an equivalent filter apparently thinks that the 150-4140 is 3.66" despite the one in my hand measuring just under 3". After much searching I think that a Wix 51348 is the right part. My Wix dealer is closed for the day so I can't get one until Monday...does this sound like the right filter? Cub Cadet 6284 owners, what filters are you using?

Just changed the oil and filter on my 6284 yesterday. I use a NAPAGOLD Oil Filter #FIL 1348 - no clearance issues. For air filters you can use a Wix 46449 or a Fleetguard AF25538.

Do be careful to measure the oil level often when filling with new oil. Some published charts show the capacity at a quart more than what registers on the dip stick - possibly resulting in overfilling. Add the first couple of quarts, check dipstick, fill a bit more checking often until the dipstick shows full, start and idle engine briefly until the oil pressure light goes out, stop engine and continue to top off the oil until the dipstick indicates it is full.

When performing your maintenance check the large fastening bolts under the tractor on the frame. Some owners have reported damage from bolts coming loose. I have found a few working loose in the past.

JN, thanks for the reply. NAPA 1348 crosses to the Wix 51348 I guessed at, so I'll pick one up and finish the job tonight. I did change the air filter and Wix 46449 was the correct one as you say.

Thanks for the advice on the oil level and frame bolts. I've already found a few loose fasteners elsewhere, which is understandable given the shaking the little Cat does at idle. Great machine though, except for the plastic fenders.

Agreed. I noticed that the plastic body is cracking under the step pad on the left side where you step up on the tractor. Can't believe that that area was not built stronger. I am going to have to get under tractor and see what I am going to have to fab to better support that area.
