I am a first-time tractor buyer looking for the right compact for my property. I have about 1.5 acres of lawn (more accurately field), and plan on a .25 to .35 acre garden, along with other odd landscaping and planting. I could get away with a small lawn tractor but the tillers one could pull would make tending to the garden time-consuming. I also like the utility a FEL offers.

I'm weighing a Cub 5234d and a JD 2210. For the implements I want (54" mid-mount or rear finish mower, 42" or 48" tiller, FEL) the Deere is about $1000 higher, and the nearest dealer is about 40 miles away, I have a Cub dealer about a mile from my home.

I've read nothing but good reports on the Deere here, but seen very little about the Cub Cadet line. Does anyone in this forum have experience with the Cub Cadet line?

Thanks in advance!

David,

I can't comment intelligently about the Cub, but many posters are quite happy with them. As for the 2210, I think it is one of the best tractor deals for the price (the price caveat being the very last consideration in my comment). Anyway, if you do decide to go down this path, I would recommend you settle on the 62C MMM. Surprisingly it makes the 2210 more maneuverable than you might expect, and will reduce the uncut circle radius to just 36", give you a better overlap, and effectively push the ROPS away from your trees etc.

Happy hunting! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

There is a good amount of members here who have the Cub. You should look in the Cub Cadet threads for more info. I only have heard good things about them...
As for comparison between the two, its a tight race based on specs', so it will come down to price and dealer rep on this one....I like em both , so I'm glad I dont have to make this choice /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

1st of all WELCOME TO THE FORUM! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif and 2nd you really need to get your seat in the seat and see which one grabs you. one might fit you better than the other.

I'm going to agree with Frank. Go out and try them both out and take the one that you feel you like the best or in other words, which one fits you butt the best. A 1,000 over the life time of you owning the rig is peanuts so I wouln't think much with that in your equation. To me, which dealer do you think is going to give you the best service after the sale. Which dealer seems to want your business more over the other one. 40 miles is a ways to go and get parts or get service. Will the dealer 40 miles away come and pickup your tractor and at what cost. As far as either tractor, both are good. My neighbor has a Cub and two others have John Deere. I have a New Holland. So go get the one you like and have fun.

I have to agree with Frank and Murph. You really need to test both out and see what you think. Both are great tractors. I'm a bit partial to the Cub... but thats just me! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Just posting my decision. I just placed my order for a slightly-used JD2210 with FEL, 54" MMM, and tiller. Both tractors looked pretty good, and I was leaning toward the CC until I found a used 2210 with only 19 hours that a dealer would sell for less than the best price I could find on a new CC (someone bought it earlier this year, then decided it was too much for them and traded down). So now I play the waiting game while my dealer orders and installs the MMM and tiller /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks for the thoughts (here and in other threads!)

It is kind of like that commercial on TV where they make up your mind for you. I think that is great to get a good deal on one like that. 19 hours is a drop in the bucket for hours. Congratulations and post pics when you get it.

I think the cub is a better deal pricewise. it was unavailable when I was shopping. I have never seen a cub 5234d up close but will say that it would be hard to beat the ease and speed of attaching/detaching attachments on a deere which are very well designed.

Congrats! Sounds like you got a good deal. Welcome to tractor ownership! Have fun and post pics. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
