A guy down the road has an 1872 Diesel with a 60" deck (1987?) and I am wondering what it is worth, the problems they have and any other info anyone out there has. I believe the water pump is leaking but was not ran out of water and still running good. Cosmetically still looks decent but definitely used. He told me to make him an offer as he is not at all mechanically inclined, but I don't really know where to start. I currently own a couple Cubs (1977 1450, 1968 cadet 60 RER, and CC SR 621 push mower) so I am obviously a big Cub fan, but don't want to pay to much for something I know very little about. Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Don't be to shy but it depends on where you are at as to it's value. Don't get to crazy on the price.

The 1872 is a super garden tractor - a little longer than the 1810-11 series of the same era - you are right it is probably 87-89 vintage. The Kubota engine in these makes them a bit more valuble if in good working order. Also if this is in the 600-900 hour range it would be a good buy under $1-1200 range - but condition and regular maintenance is key to longevity. I have seen these on the web for $1500-2K range - search a bit and you will get some idea of what to offer based on that unit condition.

As far as problems nothing major but check the hydro and rear case for leaks as this series has the cast aluminum transaxle and if used to rototill or similar this does stress this area.

As Art said it depends on the region, and if this guy took reasonable care of it would be a nice addition to your fleet.

First we have to find out what model it really is....the 1872 was an 18 HP gas from 88-89....I think what you're looking at is a 1572? They were made from 87-88, with a 15 HP Kubota diesel. After that came the 1772 and 1782, with the 17 HP Kubota diesels. I had a 1782 for years and loved it, what a workhorse. Just saw a nice 1782 (1996) sell on Ebay for 2K, which in my estimation was a very good price. Got a little interest in me, but my garage is already full..... Last years equipment blue book on a 88 1572 high trade in was 600. Good luck!

My dealer had one last year that they re-painted and fixed up a little and sold for $2400. I wanted it but thought that was a bit much even for a diesel. And they don't paint very well ;)

Why did CC quit offering Diesel Garden tractors.? ;)

Man that's a great question....they filled a great niche, and were little brutes with the diesels. The 2 downsides I know of were
1. Very expensive - tractor alone for 9K??? ouch
2. No 4wd. Main reason I got rid of mine for a sub-compact.
So Cub probably wasn't selling enough to justify their

But, they were & are great machines.
