I own a Cub Cadet 1782 (17HP diesel with 470 hours) that I purchased new in 1993 (serial # 868826). I also bought a 50" deck with it. I'd like to offer the tractor/deck for sell but I can't determine what it's fair market value is. Please, if you can, provide any links or information that may help me price my tractor & deck. The Cub Cadet is in excellent condition.

Thank you for your assistance.

As I mentioned in the pm I sent you the prices for these tractors are all over the board. It's also very hard to set a price on a tractor that a person has not seen. So if you have any photos I would be interested in looking at it. I have a model 1882 SGT that came with a 60" commercial deck and a 54" Haban plow with the front Hydraulics. The tractor is in excellent condition with 640 hrs on the meter however the motor was rebuilt last winter so it's fresh. It runs excellent and I paid $2250.00 for it this last spring.....and that is from a Cub dealer......So to price a tractor is really kind of hard to do unless you can really look it over.....check the fluids and everything else.....Hope this helps you some.

He owns the tractor,so he should know its condition. The 1782 diesel is worth more than your 1882.With his low hours a 1782D should bring at least $2500,in average condition.Of course if it is in very nice condition or has some extras, like a 3 pt,it would bring more. One thing in his favor,he has owned the tractor since new,so he knows its history.

Jeepers.....I think you better go over to the ihregistry and have a look. They don't sell that high over there unless they have numerous attachments that comes with them and there like new. Since I bought my 1882 I've bought a Original Cab for it and a 451 snowblower like new. So you could say I have just about everything for it and I'll bet I still would be very lucky to get between $2750 and $3000.......and this tractor has never been left outside and it is in excellent shape....You could ask any price for a tractor but it's only worth what someone is willing to pay.

Well there was a 782D that sold for $2500.Diesel GTs do sell for more than gas models.I own 3 diesels(all green),the cheapest one would sell for $3500 minimum. If his 1782 has only 400+ hours, and is in excellent condition,as he states, there is no way it would be worth less than $2500!
By the way I had a 2084 with 3 pt,front and rear blades and deck.It had 700 hours and brought only $2100.I would bet,you have never owned a diesel I might even go that much, even though it is the wrong color! For the most part,I would only be interested in a Cub,if it was pre MTD!

Jeepers,
I did have a diesel......as a matter of fact I traded my 782 I had in on a Case IH 234 which was the smallest at the time of there compact tractors.......I didn't care for it.....it had the big tall tires on the rear and to tell you the truth it wouldn't move snow as well as my 782 did....that was with a rear blade hooked up to the 3pt........I personally think the whole problem with these older tractors is you can only get so much out of them before your into the price range of the new 3000 series tractors. Like mine I put over $1200 into it with the new cab and the new snowblower but I know I'd never be able to get it back out......So what you really have to do is make sure this is the tractor you like and forget about rather you'll be able to recoup your money and set it up the way you want it setup and just enjoy your tractor........That is what I did.

Jeepers,
You also just put a price on a tractor that you haven't even seen........or maybe you have. I don't go by what people say anymore either......I have looked at some of the tractors that people list as excellent condition only to find there not......people that don't know tractors can look at one that has a lot of problems with it but because someone has put new paint on it and it might look nice to look at says it's in excellent condition.....it might even have a nice puddle of oil under the engine or a puddle of hydro fluid under the rear end and they never even notice it....but that tractor to them is in excellent condition.....I at the very least have to see photos of the tractor to even begin to think of a price.

Depreciation is a difficult to determine as there are many variables that affect the overall condition and value of a unit. Variables such as: hours of use, climate operated in, maintenance level, and etcetera may all affect the value of used power equipment.

Most websites do not have an “estimated market value” reference as the automotive industry has with their Blue Book. There are some companies who have published such books in the past such as Intertec and J I Case, this address: http://www.pricedigests.com/other/groundsmainequipbook.htm
One way to determine the approximate value of an older machine might be to look in the newspapers for other people selling similar equipment, or by visiting websites such as http://pages.ebay.com/ and other auction sites where used equipment is re-sold.

Well,as I stated,"if it is as he claims" in excellent condition.I did do a search for 1782 prices.I found 2,1 gas,1 diesel.Both were much more than I would give.the 1782 gas was $2900,from a dealer,it had 700+ hours.The 1782 diesel was listed last march,and was $5500!
So as I said,if his machine is in excellent condition,a 1 owner with 400+ hours,it is indeed worth at least $2500.
As for depreciation, that is pretty much a non factor beyond a certain point. This tractor is 12 years old.The thing now is to decide if you would rather pay $2500 for this machine or buy a new JD L series,a Sears GT5000 or a comparable Cub.I know I would rather have a quality older tractor than a new low end tractor.

So what do you want for your 1782 diesel? Where do I have to go to see it?
