What I did, when I had the same situation on my Kubota, was to call the dealer. He picked up the tractor and fixed it. I wrote him a check for $300+. I have the shop manual, but it looked way too involved for my comfort level.

have taken my yanmar apart and put it back together. not that hard just go slow and look at each step and picture. parts manuels are nice to have so you can see that each part looks like and order that they go together. And if its an older one like mine was did the last fool put all the little parts back and the right ones.

I agree. Parts manuals are expensive but they do shed light on the repair procedure. If I don't feel comfortable with the repair it gives me an idea on how complicated a task is. Also helpful to diagnose the problem. I have a digital camera for taking pictures in sequence ( you can tell I'm cheap ) that will also jog the memory bank as well as the parts layout. At 80 or so bucks an hour you can get my attention very quickly. A couple trips on the flat bed to the dealer can cost more than the manuals. Plus I don't like leaving my machine in someones repair facility.

Go to a cub cadet parts supplier and order the part. ask them to copy the parts page. If yours is a standart trans you will need to remoce the diff rear cover and and a c clip holding the axele in the trans. then yse a slide hammer peller to remoce the seal and the press a new one back in. The parts supplier can advise you on the tools and procedure.

When I bought my new CC a couple years ago I order a complete service and parts manual set which added $50 to the price.

I already was aware that service manuals were available - that was not the information I asked for.

I downloaded the service manual. Manual went beyond what was necessary. I also had checked with 2 large IH and Cub dealer mechanics: both gave me wrong information. The one service manager said it would take 3-4 hours to do the job. Knowing what I know now, I can do the job in 1 hour.

Here is the straight scoop: The information that I was looking for from someone who had done this job before is this:

Remove the rear diff plate:
Snap the C-Clip from the affected axle
Remove brake hardware
Slide axle out
Remove Seal
Drive a new seal in with a piece of 2" PVC and mallet.
Insert axle back into carrier
Affix the C-Clip
Put rear plate back on with new gasket.
Replace the brake hardware
Change the Filter.
Fill the transmission with proper fluid.
Cut Grass

The Service manual said to remove the body from the rear axle assembly and then remove the axle housing from the diff. This was totally not necessary and consumed about 3 hours to do so.
