I am looking for suggestions on what could cause this mower to just stop
moving. A friend was mowing with it and it just stopped moving. I know
the problem is definitely in the transmission or the hydro pump. Drive belt
is perfect and tight and fluid level is fine. If I jack it up, and put it in gear,
the wheels will turn a little but as soon as you grab them, they stop.
I was wondering if this sounds like a hydro problem or maybe a sheared pin
in the transmission? Also, I know you aren't supposed to be able to move
these things without disengaging the hydro (dump valve) but on this one,
you can move it with no problem regardless of whether you disengage the
pump or not. Thanks in advance.

have you confirmed that the hydro free-wheel disconnect hasn't been accidently activated? see your manual for details on same.

The lever that allows you to roll/push the mower has to be held down to
disengage. It has a spring that pushes it back to the engaged position when
you let go. There is no other mechanism to engage/disengage to put it in
freewheel mode. I have a John Deere hydro mower that has a similar setup
and you cant move it until you press and hold down the that lever. But I will
say the results of holding down that lever seems to be the same thing I
am experiencing without holding the lever down.

have you checked that the park brake is fully released and not seized...

Does this mower have hubcaps on the drive wheels? If yes remove the hubcaps and watch to see if the axle is turning and the wheel jsut stops. I have seen a couple of cases where the e-ring that holds the wheel on has came off which has allowed the drive key to come out. If this is all it is should be a simple fix.

Other wise you are looking at digging deeper into the HST.

Good Luck

Roy

Yes, parking break is free, otherwise I wouldn't be able to push it around. It is free-wheeling fine. It just cant be moved by putting it in gear with the engine running.

The wheels are not loose and the axles are not spinning inside the hub. Its definitely
something either with the transmission or the hydro. I know that for a fact. I was
wondering if it was common for a particular gear to shear a key or pin or shatter or
one of the shafts inside the unit to strip or shear.

I know I will have to go into it but I have never been inside a transmission. Rebuilt
many a engines but never been inside a transmission or hydro. Looks like I will finally
get my opportunity.

Problem found !!
It was one of the couplers that was worn to the point that the shaft was just spinning inside the coupler. It was the one on the pinion shaft which mates with the output of the hydro pump.

There are 2 sets (4 halves) of couplers. It was the coupler half that goes
onto the pinion shaft of the transmission which mates with the output of
the hydro pump shaft. The 3 of the 4 halves were ok.

This makes sense because I there would obviously be much higher torque on the pump output to transmission shaft which would cause a higher degree of wear over time. Part number HG-44084P from Cub Cadet.

So this will be an easy fix and it looks like the parts are plenty available. Many thanks for everyone's help. Robert
