Cub Cadet 1250
OK, my 1250 tractor died just now while mowing. It has fuel in the tank, tried starting fluid just to be sure and still nothing. So I put an inline spark tester and no light when cranking. 12 volt line to the coil read about 12.4 so seems OK there. Disconnected the coil and ran the multimeter test. ~8K ohms from hi-tension lead to the + or - post, but infinite resistance (by my electronic meter) between the negative and positive coil posts. I assume that my coil is bad as it should be somewhere under 2 ohms resistance there.

However, I replaced this coil last year with an oil filled NAPA coil as recommended on this board. I cannot find that interchange now. So, two questions:

(1) What are the coil interchanges on Kohler 12hp (K301?) engines on Cub Cadets
(2) what might burn it out so quick?

Any help is appreciated. It is dead at the bottom of the hill until I get a part.

It doesn't look like you're getting any responses. I don't know of you've gotten it running yet but if I remember from my 1450 the coil is a pretty much run-of-the-mill automotive coil. Any 12 volt automotive coil that looks similar and can be mounted should work.

Thanks Bob. Since I did get it fixed, I'll take a second to post an update here. Yes, a run of the mill coil will get you by. I think I was wrong where I found the interchange information. At least, I couldn't find it again here. I did find it on onlycubcadets.com. Here's the thread:

after market coil, condensor - Only Cub Cadets

The standard $20 NAPA coil mentioned worked well, but not for long. I replaced it in October and it failed again in March. I replaced it this time with the official $70 Kohler coil, also sourced through NAPA. It's too early to tell if it holds up any better. The first unit's part # was IC14SB, $22.21. The second unit was SME 4151921S for $72.99.

Just for the full details, this is a Cub Cadet 1250 with a K301, still has points and a condensor, coil is bolted laying down, directly to the side of the engine. I think this is all stock for that model. I even still have the side panels on (Quiet Line).
