Anyone know how much water #3 crushed rock will displace (1.5")?

I'm trying to figure out how much water a french drain can hold (assuming no percolation)?

It's actually a footer drain (9' below grade), that I'm bringing all the way to grade to help with grade-level drainage.

Thank you!

Fill a 5 gal pail with rock and measure how much water to fill it with the rock in it. That should give you a pretty close idea.

Absolutely perfect
I'm thinking of "tables" somewhere or an internet answer, blah, blah, blah. Straight line thinking and answer that often elude me.

Two engineers were standing at the base of a flagpole, looking at its top.

A woman walked by and asked what they were doing.

"We're supposed to find the height of this flagpole," said Sven, "but we don't have a ladder."

The woman took a wrench from her purse, loosened a couple of bolts, and laid the pole down on the ground. Then she took a tape measure from her pocketbook, took a measurement, announced, "Twenty one feet, six inches," and walked away.

One engineer shook his head and laughed, "A lot of good that does us. We ask for the height and she gives us the length!"

So, in that vein, your procedure is not correct. You would have to fill the bucket with water and then add the rock. Otherwise the rock is not displacing any water since it is there first. ;)

Find the weight of a fixed volume of aggregate and the same volume of water. The difference will be the weight of the water.

To be honest that is how I first thought of solving the problem and then I said: Hey this is easier.

I’m wondering why the need to know the water volume and no pipe in the drain?

Thank you!

I'll be darned if I'd send water INTO a footer drain.
