In the process of bringing my new/used tractor up to speed with it's maintenance I decided to change out the transmission oil only to discover that it's a light creamy color. I'm concerned this may be water, can someone please inform me if I'm correct or if it's something else and what is the repair. Thank you in advance for any help or advice you can provide me.

Peter

P.S. I have a dipstick in a fill reservoir directly behind the seat, can someone please inform me what this reservoir is for?

It's almost certainly water. The most common reason for this is nothing more complicated than a poor choice of parking places. Rain runs down the shift levers, melting ice/show seeps through rotten gaskets cover plate gaskets. The other source is condensation from parking in direct sunlight. Drain/flush/refill is the only fix, and you might want to replace the crappy Chinese cover gaskets with decent ones too. I recommend flushing with kerosene, although diesel fuel will do in a pinch. Get bulk gasket material from an auto parts store and cut your own replacements. Dry parking in full-time shade will subsequently be the single most effective method to minimize recurrence.

The reservoir under the seat is for hydraulic fluid.

Greg is spot on. Just to clerify, drain it and replace with kero or diesel in a pinch. Drive it around for 5 minutes. Do not do any work, just drive forward and reverse using all gears if possible. Drain and refill with 80W90 gear oil.

Also, it takes a while to drain. There are 4 drain plugs total. One on each side of the draw bar mount, on under the creeper box, and another on the output of the front drive shaft. When refilling it takes a while to get gear oil in the creeper box. It has to travel though the bearing. I did a mod to my tractor and put a dipstick on the cover.

I concur with Greg & Chris.
Checking the dipstick occasionally between service intervals will alert you early on to this type of thing.

Thank you gentlemen, I've cleaned out the tranny and refilled with new oil. I'll be ordering a new shifter boot tomorrow since the one that's there now is old and cracked.
