Me.

Had a stand off with what I think was a coyote the other nite.
( Was to dark and to far away to see for sure. but I wasn't gonna try and get up any closer for a better look. )
.
The thing just stood in it's tracks and wouldn't let me out the door of my storage building so I could get back into the house.
The stand off musta lasted about 5 minutes before it trurned in it's tracks and went the other way.

Sounds like it might not be too bad of a habit to take a spotlight and a rifle of decent size (IMO no rimfires) for such a creature with you to the shed at least for a while, just in case it's intentions get a little less friendly. And if you do decide to shoot it, please try to make it a good clean humane kill, not gutshoot it like some will probably recommend. That's just not right...

Back when I lived on Whidbey Island, we would hear them all the time but rarely did you ever see one.

I've shot five or six with my .22 Magnum rimfire Winchester lever action using hollowpoints in the heart-lung at ranges up to 60 yards, all were one shot kills. They are all over our place.

They probably can get rabid like a dog too, can't they?

my uncle baits them after he was attacked by a coy dog a few years ago. lives outside Coal valley IL

He usually gets between 3 and 8 a year (winter only)

Hes shooting ~150 yards, scoped 22-250 but didnt have enough take down power so he stepped up to a .308 (which he shoots NATO 7.62 in)

You bet, any mammal can carry rabies. Most common are bats, skunks, raccons, and foxes.

A stand-off implies that the critter was exhibiting aggressive tendencies ... this would clearly bother me... Around here, when I see a coyote they are always moving... and when they see me, even at 300 yards, they grab another gear and move on. A rabid animal will not only act unusual but be out and about at unusual times, such as in plain daylight. Since your critter was out at night, that's natural. Did it see you plainly and did you make noise to announce your where abouts? If so and it still stood its ground, then either it is unafraid of humans because of familiarity, or it is sick. Either way, it needs to be destroyed if there is a chance to do so should you see it again.

My place sounds like a Steven King movie nearly every night and I often see coyotes during the day. But... they are very good at avoiding people and I usually see their tail end as they scatter away. If you had a standoff for 5 minutes, it was either acting out of character or it was a dog.

When I do see them, I usually clap my hands which puts them in high gear. I don't want them to get used to me.

Mornin LBrown,
My neighbor has had problems with them trying to get at his chickens. He has taken a few out at about 100 yds using his Ruger 77, 22-250. One shot finished business. Thats a great gun for that job !;)
