I posted up a while back that I picked up some parts to build a log splitter. Well the time has come to start as I picked up the steel I beam yesterday. I have a 4.5" bore by 30" stroke with a 2" cylinder, my question about that is, it has 1/2" ports, I want good cycle times so could I have the ports re done to a larger size?
Will I be able to utilize a 22gpm pump or will it be a waste of money with the 1/2" ports on the cyl?
Would I be better off with a 16gpm pump and settle for what speeds I get?
I have plenty of motor, a 15hp.
I have a large reservoir, I'm not sure of the gallons but it is 18" square and about 20" tall with sight tube and temp gauge.

Thanks in advance for the help,
dave

On a side note, I have two of the reservoirs if anyone in the area would like a good deal on one. I don't think it would be feasible to ship.

I would just get jump size fittings and run 5/8 ID hose on the rod end and possibly consider 3/4 ID on the blind or cap end. Yes the fitting will cause some restriction but not enough to slow the cylinder down.

Make your tank line 1 inch hose.

Ok, that was easy enough...LOL thanks.
Now my next question, when ordering hoses, how would you measure for them? Use a piece of hose similar in size and route it then measure? That's the way I'm thinking.

That is usually the best method. Just remember to keep your measuring hose straight out from ports for a distance similar to how the hose ends will restrict the hose movement or bending. Also remember hydraulic hoses shrink in length when under pressure so try to allow for this so that they don't pull on the hose ends.

Ok, thanks for all the help. I'm going to have some time this week I think and I would like to get started on this thing. I love having the experience and knowledge on this site to rely on for help.
I'll keep you all posted as this thing progresses :)
