I'm needing a "Good" county map and Google Maps just don't cut it. There is a map maker called Metskers but they don't make county maps any more. I need something with the best resolution as I can find and up to date and all roads and utilities as much as I can get. Specifically Franklin County Washington state. What are my options here. Any Cartographers out there. bjr

Edit:

Well after a little more research and (As Often the Case With Me), I found out how much I really didn't know. I didn't know my Principle Meridian from my Baseline AND I found out what I actually was lookin' for was a Township map. So Now I can ask Where can I purchase a Township Map? You Just Have to Know this stuff, being a little humourist here!

Have you ever seen a gazetteer map? Not sure if that's what you are looking for but they are very detailed. I have one for Kansas so I know all the roads for Motorcycle riding.

State or local gis department if there is one is best source

Try Big Sky Maps. They specialize in PNW specialty maps; I have several Idaho county maps from a long time ago. Large format and lots of detail.

What do you consider a "county map"?

Good maps are downloadable from USGS for FREE.

Another service of your federal government that many here seem to bash.

By golly, you are correct. Metsker no longer makes county maps. I have many of their county maps here in Ea WA but they are all at least twenty years old.

I've started using DeLorme Atlas & Gazetteer for Washington. I use this mapping system to plan out local trips on my motorcycle.

For really "close in" work I go to the Spokane County Assessors web site and pull up their assessing maps. They contain a lot of info I don't use - property ownership, valuation, structures - but are quite detailed for roads, trails etc.

De Lorme's business & store is a little over an hour drive from me, a great store with a lot more than just their "gazetteer" books in there. I love their maps but I heard on the local radio that they were bought by Garmin……the GPS folks. I hope that does not mean an end to their actual maps, GPS sucks for actually learning anything.

Franklin County Washington state GIS Department - Franklin County Geographic Information System
If that is the type of map you are looking for. Sometimes the state also has GIS maps like OGRIP or LIDAR maps for public use.
You can search for those if you like.

These are the folks that have what you need. I did the orthophoto work for them in the past, look for the various layers such as transportation(roads), parcels(property lines and parcel numbers), hydrology (streams, rivers and lakes, etc.). There is a wealth of information on line these days and most of it is free ( actually it your tax dollars at work so take advantage of it, a lot of the pay for play information is just a repackaged version of the public county/state GIS data). Another good source of geographic information is the USGS National Map http:// https://www.usgs.gov/products/maps/overview

Or, you could just go to your township office and ask for a map. Same with the county map. Go to the county courthouse and ask for a map. I've always gotten them for free here but some charge a nominal fee. When I lived in Ohio, the township charged a $2 copy fee but county maps were free if you lived in the county.

State DOT websites usually have these maps available to view. Washington DOT has theirs in an online app.

WSDOT - Maps and Data

Click on Online Map Center.
Then click on the GeoPortal app (it's the one with the globe of the earth pic).
After the Geoportal app loads in your web browser, check the Township / Section box in the left column. Make sure Township and Section boxes are checked in the sub section.
Use you mouse to move around and zoom in on what you want to look at in the map.

Just 4 years ago, you had to print a form, and put a check in an envelop to order maps. This is what happens when a government runs something. You can order **** online with a credit card for 20 years.

Last night I ordered a couple maps on line.

I also downloaded a bunch, which is cool

I don't know where you pulled that up. USGS has had FREE downloadable maps for a LONG time.

I downloaded all the maps around my area in Mississippi in 2011 (5 years ago) prior to buying my most recent house.

Sure, if you didn't know where to look you could pay for them.

I'd been in the mapping business since 1975 before I retired in 2011.

Delorme made great maps. With google i have never needed a paper map in yrs.

Paper is nice for size. It is hard to get big picture on monitor.

I tell people you can have more then tool.

I can't speak to every state, but Iowa, we get sent Platt map books every year free of charge from some outfit. If you own land in the country, you get a Platt book. shows all roads and property ownership information broken down into section of the county. Not sure if that is what you were looking for.
