I know there are a few good contractors that visit these forums often. Chime in please...
What portion of your expenses are materials usually?
I'm looking to build a shop/barn in the future and put an addition on the house. I can do a lot of the work myself, but I'll contract out some of the work too. My wife's the designer, and I'm trying to get some rough cost estimates in mind for the various options she's come up with. I'm hoping that if I can get a good feel for what percentage of building costs are materials, labor, etc., I can use that information in deciding what we can afford to do ourselves and what we can afford to have someone else do.
I know I could get to the materials cost by specifing each 2X4 and shingle, but I'm hoping you experts can save me some time.
